Does anyone fancy lobbying the Today programme to ask them to cover Fran Lyon's story?

I've just sent them the following, but put what you like really, the more emails they receive the better!
This is where you need to post:
www.bbc.co.uk/radio4/today/contact/

Social services have decided to take Fran Lyons baby away as soon as she is born.
When Fran was sixteen years old, (she is now 22) she was the victim of a serious sexual assault, and as a result, she suffered from mental health issues. She received therapy for two years, one year as an inpatient, and less than one following her discharge. She has not received or needed any mental health therapy since that time, and the psychiatrist that treated her has explicitly stated that she has no concerns whatsoever for Fran's mental health.

Unfortunately, early on in Fran?s pregnancy, there was a difficult situation with her (then) partner, and Fran called the police. Due to the nature of the problem and combined with the fact that Fran was pregnant, the police referred the case to social services. Fran was completely honest and open about her past mental health issues, and clear that she no longer suffered from any such problems. However, a paediatrician, from the Royal Victoria Infirmary in Newcastle, who has never actually met or spoken to Fran, has inexplicably suggested that she may in due course suffer from Munchausen's Syndrome by Proxy. This has resulted in Hexham Children's services deciding that upon her birth, Fran?s baby daughter, Molly, will be taken away from her. The final decision is technically made by the Child Protection Conference, based on recommendations from the Social services, and the 'independent chair'.

It is abundantly clear that Fran Lyon will be absolutely no danger to her baby, but at the very least, Fran should be allowed to stay in an assessment unit with her baby, Molly, pending the (inevitable) decision that she is more than capable of caring for her daughter independently.

She was recently interviewed on This Morning: uk.youtube.com/watch?v=2qHcH_Eaocg and there has been some coverage in the press too.

A petition has been set up here. www.thepetitionsite.com/takeaction/539543596

It would be fantastic if the Today programme could cover this story, and hopefully get some feedback from the responsible social services department.

I'll do it. I read about this a while back and was horrified.

has anyone asked her?

TheMolesMother · 12/11/2007 12:55

Nappy addict - I think I can.

I'm a professional researcher, and, being the sad person I am, I've spent the best part of the weekend link hopping to try and find out more about the wider issues surrounding Fran's case.

Fran is caught between two opposing forces - on the one side, campaign groups fighting for parents accused of MSbP and on the other lobbying groups supporting peadiatricians Southall and Meadow.

Regular contributors to the Guardian are Jonathan Gornall, a freelance journalist who has made a crusade out of supporting Southall and Meadow and Bea Campbell, a journalist and pundit who, long after independent enquiries had concluded it did not exist, was still trying to convince the world of the reality of satanic ritual abuse. Her partner, Judith Jones, was one of the social workers involved in the Nottingham satanic ritual abuse case.

Gornall also writes for the Times. Don't know about the Indie.

Having ploughed my way through this lot I am not surprised that Fran enlisted the help of seasoned campaigners like Penny Mellor and John Hemming. No-one can fight this kind of battle alone. Unfortunately, in the eyes of some, she is "tainted by association" and will be seen as a legitimate target.

Thanks MM - that's been puzzling me for a while!

I'm happy to talk to anyone, from either "side". I don't need "hired guns" so to speak, I need people who can help get at the truth.

Thank,

Fran

TheMolesMother · 12/11/2007 13:12

Glad to be of some use, Fran.

As I wasn't doing an assignment I didn't keep track of any of the links, I'm afraid, but Googling the names I've given in my post should give you a start.

Keeping my fingers crossed for you.

TheMolesMother · 12/11/2007 15:59

Couldn't agree with you more, nappyaddict.
