bindeez...toxic...warning

israel · 06/11/2007 12:01

Here is Australia...the childrens craft/game of bindeeze...has been withdrawn from the shelves....It is a childrens pack of small beads, that when wet join together to create a picture or pattern...
You may or may not have them in the UK.
It has been discovered that the little beads if swallowed by children acts like the drug GHB!!!

I don't suppose that has a sedative effect does it?

Budabang · 06/11/2007 12:10

PMSL GunPowder!

3Ddonut · 06/11/2007 12:13

Blimey!!! dd1 has just asked Father Christmas for bindeez, I'd never heard of them, although not keen due to having dd2 (18months) in the house, so now it's a no-no for sure!

israel · 06/11/2007 12:14

ghb...used to get high...party drug...!!!

MissusH · 06/11/2007 12:18

at toxic...

LOL at sedative effect....

I have visions of hardened clubbers raiding ToysRUs for a cheap fix......

Hate the sodding things anyway - they ping everywhere when dropped onto wooden floors [grrr emoticon]

Is the excuse I need to chuck them

Jacanne · 06/11/2007 12:29

I hope Aquabeads are okay as dd1 got some for her birthday yesterday - was only a matter of luck that we didn't choose Bindeez. They were topped to be one of the best selling toys this xmas I think.

GunpowderDragonsAndSoup · 06/11/2007 12:37

Party drug?? [gulp]

GunpowderDragonsAndSoup · 06/11/2007 12:38

They're advertised all over the cable children's TV channels.

anniebear · 06/11/2007 13:37

my DD has them and loves them

surely there will be some 'news' over about them s if they are dangerous

Untill then she will keep doing them lol keeps her quiet!

israel · 06/11/2007 21:35

Dear anniebear....This has been news in New zealand and now here in australia...I have put this on mumsnet as a warning...but i am sure it will come out there, in the news, in time!!...
Musnet is a way of sharing news...and i particularly thought news about a toxic childs toy should be shared...If you find it funny to think that its safe for your daughter to continue playing with them...when here in Australia a child is lying in hospital seriously ill...well so be it.

[raids the toy box]

what does GHB do to you?

btw, never ever forget to take these out of your pocket if you pickthem up off the floor when cleaning. then put your trousers in the washing machine and tumble dryer...

i have plastic sealed pockets on one pair of trousers.

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 06/11/2007 21:39

i cant find anyth9ing about this on google btw.

LadyVictoriaOfCake · 06/11/2007 21:40

oops was s[pelling it wrong!!

israel · 06/11/2007 21:50

YES...GOOGLE IT...THEN YOU CAN SEE.

OP posts:
LadyVictoriaOfCake · 06/11/2007 21:52

seems like it is due to a chemical subsitution

dd1's set if from march this year, will put them out of the way, but not binning them yet untill we know more.

BettySpaghetti · 07/11/2007 11:27

Oh f * * * !

DD has spoken of nothing else other than wanting these for her b'day or Christmas so I've just got IL's to buy the super studio set.

Will wait and see if it effects al the products worldwide.

AitchTwoOh · 07/11/2007 11:32

just give on a chew, misdee, see what occurs. and keep posting, will ya?

mintydixcharrington · 07/11/2007 11:46

these are still for sale on amazon and woolies etc

sounds horrendous, I'd put them all straight in the bin if I were you. Unbelievably dangerous

MegaLegs · 07/11/2007 11:48

Was just about to say same minty. Maybe it was just a particular batch that went to Australia - either way I wouldn't risk it.

I have just gone completely over the top and emailed bbc news with a link to link on other thread. Mainly because the only ref to Bindeez on the BBC news site is as atop toy for Christmas.

bluejelly · 07/11/2007 11:50

Good on you megalegs
I think it should get in the newspapers too, does anyone know any print journos?

mintydixcharrington · 07/11/2007 11:50

I almost emailed woolies and amazon and then decided that if we were talking about it they would know about it

but then if they knew about it they wouldn't be selling them

sigh

off to send emails!

My DP has telephoned Character Options who told him the product had been removed from sale for a few days while they run independent tests on it. They also read the following statement to him:

*7th November 2007

Character Options, the UK distributor of Bindeez product, believe that its supplies of Bindeez conform to UK regulations and when used as intended and clearly instructed, ?The product is safe?.

We have, however in light of recent press reports from Australia, instructed an independent test laboratory and an independent EU toxicologist to immediately test and analyse the chemical composition of our stocks. We are taking this action in order to reconfirm their safety and to alleviate any concerns you may have with the product.

Character takes the safety of children very seriously and whilst waiting for the results of these tests we have taken the precaution of temporarily removing Bindeez from sale. We anticipate this will be for no more than a few days and Bindeez products will be available again at retail shortly.

In terms of product already in consumer?s homes, we again can confirm when used as intended and clearly instructed, the product product is ages 4 and we advise that Bindeez products are not given to children younger than this age.

Results of our re-testing will be posted shortly on the character website:

www.character-online.co.uk

On behalf of Character we apologise for any inconvenience caused by this situation and thank you for your co-operation*

They have directed him to their website and said there will be updates as they know more.

The address is www.character-online.com/Press-Release/

With the maid site being www.character-online.com/ where they have a headline and a press release.

mintydixcharrington · 07/11/2007 21:10

"when used as intended"
ie if you don't eat it

If I had any in the house I'd bin them

prufrock · 07/11/2007 21:22

Damn - just bought these for dd as a wel doen for her school report (it was the report that was ultra delayed, not the present). We've made stuff with them all afternoon. She'll be gutted when I tell her they have to go.

mintydixcharrington · 07/11/2007 21:40

poor thing
can you take her back to the shop, return them, and get her to choose something else?

scary, isn't it, that something so innocent can be so nasty
