i personally think that the name 'happy slapping' is a complete misnomer.. same as joyriding is totally inappropriate.

i don;t know if the level of violence has increased since i was at school, 15 or so years ago, just with the advent of the internet, mobiles etc. it is more 'out there'

any thoughts?

Jeez, she looks like butter wouldn't melt!

Agree people do seem so much more callous today than "when I were a lass". Our society seems de-sensitised to violence somewhat.

Lulumama · 02/11/2007 16:22

in some ways , we are far more hard on violence, as a society

e.g you would not get a clip round the ear from a teacher or police man now,( not that i think that was ever appropriate!! ) but yet some teens think that battering the hell out of each other and filming it, is ok..

i find it perplexing, but still wonder if it is not the level of this sort of violence that has increased, but simply we hear about it more...

also, think the name happy slapping belies the seriousness of what this is.. assualt, battery, etc.. and makes it therefore more acceptable?

Children are more protected in lots of ways (ie. no corporal punishment as you mentioned) but I think violence is shown on TV/Video Games/cinema far more, same with sex and swear words.

Little thug, agree that it shouldn't be called "happy slapping" it is assault, plain and simple. Calling it by that name makes it sound less serious, bet the girl getting her hair hauled in that photo didn't find it "happy."
