Shock

Although on second thoughts it could be crap journalism, along the lines of the Sunday Sport.

MeMySonAndI · 19/10/2007 19:54

I'm not that chocked TBH. When working in areas of extreme poverty I realised that many families were using dog food tins as their only source of protein (although bought, not given). Rest of the food came from the local tip.

Callisto · 20/10/2007 08:46

FGS she is a dog food manufacturer so she would hardly offer M&S ready meals would she? If my child was starving and the only food on offer was dog food I would happily accept.

hippipotOFBLOODami · 20/10/2007 18:05

Dog food by law has to be edible by humans. So if by changing vitamins to suit humans she can produce a nutritial meal which is suitable for humans (and is cheap, easy to transport, easy to store and easy to use/consume) then I say great!

I think the journalist was being deliberately outraged 'X things there is no difference between an african and a puppy' is a quote that shows this.

She makes dog food. So she knows about cheap food production, food which is tinned or dry and easily re-constituted. She is now thinking outside the box and coming up with a solution for starving africans. Out of her own pocket, she is not selling this to Africa is she?
So good on her.

(unless I have completely misread the article and am talking rubbish)

I'm with hippipot, I think it's sensationilist journalism, when the woman in fact was coming up with a great solution - mmmmm a diet of rice or beef, mutton, garlic and added vitamins............

3andnogore · 20/10/2007 20:46

hm...I personally would not want to be expected to eat dog food or catfood...because, well, thetuff that is in it would really turn my stomach and tbh, it stinks.....
I think I ratehr live on army rations then....

hippipotOFBLOODami · 20/10/2007 20:53

ah, but is that because we associate the smell with dog/cat food? and is it smelly to appeal to the dog/cat? perhaps this woman is doing something to the smell also?

it would still be better than starving to death...

3andnogore · 20/10/2007 21:01

hm...the smell, I would think is because a) they use a lot of innerts (saying that, they do use all sorts in the common sausages, too, lol)....and with dogfood the smelliest is tribe, but that is because tribe just completely reeks...
well, my inlaws live nearish a Pet food factory and the production of it reeks even more then the food itself...

It is kinda degrading though...to expect someone to eat animalfood , because they are starving...there are other ways...why not send ordinary tinned produce to them? Why would one choose pet food?

BrownSuga · 20/10/2007 21:05

this is old news

cornsilk · 20/10/2007 21:16

At least she is doing something.

3andnogore · 20/10/2007 21:17

Thats better then

RoyKinnear · 20/10/2007 21:25

i think it is obvuiously a 'wholefood' like these shakes or whatever
agree with callisto - i would feed my wains whatever would keep them alive

Nightynight · 20/10/2007 21:58

If it really had been dog food, it would have been completely unnacceptable, and I can scarcely believe that anyone would seriously think otherwise.

If anyone hasn't read the 2nd link, it gives the explanation. Looks like the original story was a nasty bit of racist sensationalism.

I am a bit shocked by the report about starving Kenyans - my AP is Kenyan, her family is not starving!
