John Sentamu denied a peerage. WTAF?

I love John Sentamu.

He is the first Bishop to be denied a peerage upon his retirement. Apparently he was initially told he'd receive one in line with all his predecessors but then got a 'phone call' telling him it wasn't to be (according to the Guardian).

Boris has given his own brother a peerage, Theresa May's dh and Ian Botham. Nothing for Mr Sentamu though. I wonder why. Actually, I don't wonder at all clearly he's a bit left of centre and far too black.

I'm still disgusted though.

It's not like he's been absent or low profile! What's that about?

StealthPolarBear · 18/10/2020 18:30

I read this elsewhere to. Surely there must be an 'explanation'?

TheEmpressOfUtterBastardry · 18/10/2020 18:30

Well as far as I'm concerned it's about a racist government.

StealthPolarBear · 18/10/2020 18:32

I was about to say I'm surprised they'd be so blatant
But then I realise I've already said that about them on another topic. So maybe I need to get over my surprise and accept they'll do what the hell they like, lie to our faces like we're idiots and then tell us to move on

itsovernowthen · 18/10/2020 18:32

Absolutely disgusting.

Jayaywhynot · 18/10/2020 18:37

I love John Sentamu, I live in York, he's been a fab Archbishop, he's a man of the people.
Absolutely outrageous, I'm off to email someone, don't know who yet but I'm about to unleash my inner Karen on my MP, Boris, someone.
I actually can't believe this

TheEmpressOfUtterBastardry · 18/10/2020 18:38

Clair Fox has been given one. I mean, why? what's her contribution to the fabric of society? and Ian Botham?

This government is so fucking racist.

OP posts:
SBTLove · 18/10/2020 18:38

Not forgetting waste of space Ruth Davidson getting one 😡 Ian bloody Botham ffs 😡

OnceUponAMidnightBeery · 18/10/2020 18:41

WTF? What excuse will they try and come up with I wonder?

StealthPolarBear · 18/10/2020 18:42

They'll say he was offered one and turned it down.
Done, conversation over, move ON people

Tolleshunt · 18/10/2020 18:42

I’m outraged as well. This is so pointed. I’m not a churchgoer, but he’s a good man who genuinely cares and tries his utmost. It’s standard for bishops to get them. It’s not because of performance, so what? Who’s he pissed off? Surely it’s not a race issue, even if they are racist bastards, surely they’d realise they can’t be seen to be so?

But then, this administration does seem remarkably totalitarian when it comes to any ideas or people who aren’t three steps to the right of Genghis Khan.

Eve · 18/10/2020 18:43

Fucking Boris and this fucking Government!

I know the archbishop wouldn’t appreciate those sentiments but I’m sick to the back teeth of this shower of shites and their lies , corruption and cronyism!

Never been on a protest march in my life but this middle aged / middle class mother wants to march on Downing Street and throw things at them AngryAngry

BewareTheBeardedDragon · 18/10/2020 18:43

This is outrageous and so depressing

LimaFoxtrotCharlie · 18/10/2020 18:49

Peerages and the whole honours list should be abolished. No public figure needs a further honour, and no civil servants should receive one just for doing their job.
I’d instigate a new system for honouring ordinary people who’ve done something to benefit their own community - so the scout leaders, meals on wheels co-ordinators, village recreation ground grass cutters etc get the recognition they deserve

PerkingFaintly · 18/10/2020 18:50

The "reason" that No 10 gave was that they wanted to keep numbers in the House of Lords down.

But they did manage to squeeze in Boris' brother, Theresa May's husband, Claire Fox and Ian Botham.

According to that article, Sentamu was initially told that he was in line for a peerage, then told he hadn't made the cut.

Unbelievable. While still, at the same time, all too believable. Angry

ErrolTheDragon · 18/10/2020 18:55

I'm hoping the explanation for this is that there's now a recognition that the leaders of the Church of England should not get automatic life peerages. (Nor the 'Lords Spiritual' seats in the lords either).

Maybe Sentamu is generally better than some but he is one of the bishops implicated in covering up child sex abusers in his organisation.

Maybe people aren't aware of this, but imo such men should not get automatic honours.

ventanaperrito · 18/10/2020 18:56

Well well well, I wonder why that could be then ?

SerendipityJane · 19/10/2020 11:22

A slow return to "the right chap" mentality in society and public life. With the emphasis on chap. (And notice that "right" rhymes with "white")

Don't worry - the pain will pass. In 2024 this will all seem so terribly normal.

itsovernowthen · 19/10/2020 12:30

They seem to have had a rethink:

If I were him, I'd probably reject it. Sickening behaviour designed to diminish the individual.

cdtaylornats · 23/10/2020 17:17

For all you know he might have let it be known he didn't want it.
