Lots of chat about this last week - at the risk of being controversial I'd like to ask the question should we watch. On the one hand horrible (how could anyone let their newborn have cameras all over their house...) on the other hand interesting to see all these diverse ideas.
And just in case - here is the healthwarning as this is a genuine question for me ? Do we watch reality TV like this (and hence encourage it) or do we vote with our feet ?

I will be watching so I can complain with all the informaiton needed

I will probably cry again too

chankins · 02/10/2007 19:57

I'll be watching it in hope that the parents following the truby king method will give in and pick up their crying babies and tell that horrible woman to sling her hook. I know I shouldn't watch really - it is experimenting on babies, and very hard to watch babies going through something you would not do to your own. I just have to believe they won't keep it up! surely they won't!

andyrobo237 · 02/10/2007 21:13

That Clare woman is just plain mean - and she doesnt even have kids! Humans are social beings -I couldnt put my baby in the garden for 3 hours at a time! the neighbours would complain with the screaming!

TrinityRhino · 02/10/2007 21:13

I really despise Claire Verity

wheresthehamster · 02/10/2007 21:15

Apparently all the families are still following their guru's advice (according to Channel 4 anyway)

LittleBella · 02/10/2007 21:31

I am watching it now, it is rubbish.

It obviously loves Dr Spock.

And I suppose I shouldn't be surprised that it misses the point about breastfeeding.

Rosyspookily · 02/10/2007 21:33

I'm finding it distressing.

This program saved us!!!

Cos it makes me feel that they way we parent is better than we thought!!!!

Its very sad though - the 50's women obviously has never felt affection for children. Was pleased at how they portrayed breast feeding though....

LittleBella · 03/10/2007 20:56

I thought the way they portrayed bf was really wrong tbh. They made no mention of the fact that breastmilk outweighs formula milk by miles, that the WHO recommends at least 2 years for children to be bf and their general approach was "it's nice if you can be arsed, but actually it's probably too much trouble."

Disgraceful.

chocciedooby · 03/10/2007 21:23

Will Claire Verity ever crack a smile!!!!??

I was appalled when she said" I think people who pick up babies are stupid, absolutley stupid, there is absolutley no need to pick up a baby"." Leave IT alone, don't touch IT"!!!!!!!! Shock, horror.

All babies need cuddling, expecially in the first few weeks of their lives. How can she be so cold and why does she refer to a baby as IT???

sheepgirl · 03/10/2007 21:38

scary scary programme but I can't help thinking that all major theories based around child psychology were conducted on children. Surely the only difference here is we can see it?

Also what makes me feel less sick when seeing the TK approach is these couples would have chosen that method regardless...who klnows might have paid CV £1,000 a week for her advice!!!

LittleBella · 03/10/2007 21:40

Yes there is something not mentally right about someone who calls a baby It.

What is that famous biography of that guy who was horribly abused as a child?

"A child called It" wasn't it called?

Am I labouring the point a bit?

lovecamping · 03/10/2007 21:43

just to clarify - is claire verity the 'guru' that believes in the 1950's style of parenting and following trudy king??

sheepgirl · 03/10/2007 21:44

Dave Pelzer is his name, although is story is disputed by his family and apparently there is sketchy social service records about what really happened. Is bro just wrote a book about his version of events.

chocciedooby · 03/10/2007 21:44

Yes.

sheepgirl · 03/10/2007 21:44

yes lovecamping

sheepgirl · 03/10/2007 21:46

What I find most fascinating about last nights episode is that out of all the babies the ones under the TK regime where crying the most.

chocciedooby · 03/10/2007 21:47

Because they want a cuddle!!! Bless the poor little babies.

LittleBella · 03/10/2007 21:47

LOL yes, but you have to remember that in 4 weeks they won't be, because they'll have learned that there's no point in crying, no-one comes.

Just like Miles in the NSPCC campaign. And Rumanian orphans.

chocciedooby · 03/10/2007 21:49

I wonder if the 1950's method babies will be affected in anyway when they grow up by the lack of cuddling and attention that they get when newborn?

sheepgirl · 03/10/2007 21:52

There isn't clear research on that but there is evidence to suggest that babies left to cry for a prolonged length of time often become insecure, low in self-confidence and angry adults.

chocciedooby · 03/10/2007 22:04

Leaving a baby in the garden for 3 hours!!!!!!!!It's madness!!!!!!!

sheepgirl · 03/10/2007 22:07

Come on there some be at least one mum out there that is a TK advocate....I don't want to attack you I am just interested to hear an argument for this method. I am struggling to see any...as for the way CV handles babies when she is changing them. Even my dh couldn't watch!

ThomasTankEngine · 03/10/2007 22:08

Do you think the TK method is similar to the Gina Ford method?
