Anybody else notice it today? Ad for American Apparel (who?) featuring rear view, shot from below, of woman bent forward on tiptoe with widely spread legs, wearing only tights.

It's not revealing but it's Not Nice.

Yes I agree - I spent some time just looking at it wondering what on earth it was about, who it was for, what the product was, etc.

Came to the conclusion that it was just soft porn really.

I'm no prude, but I really think it's distasteful.

Bluestocking · 15/09/2007 21:17

That advert is horrid. But have you noticed that appalling dicksplatting bugfucker highly talented and controversial Jon Ronson says this is his last column for Guardian Weekend?

WideWebWitch · 15/09/2007 21:22

No I didn't but eww. It pisses me off this normalisation of porn

BecauseImWorthIt · 15/09/2007 21:55

Yes I read his column today - I usually avoid it because I can't bear him. He's an arrogant self-centred twat irritating man.

I think it's a real skill to write about 'nothing', i.e daily life - but his stuff is just so tedious. Glad he's finishing.

I did see it and thought 'Yuck, there's a yeast infection waiting to happen...'

There used to be a TV ad in the 1970's for DIM tights that was obviously French in origin, that showed back views of various women in short skirts climbing ladders/passing over ventilation shafts/walking alongside steam engines and it was quite obvious they weren't wearing knicks beneath the tights either. My sister and I thought this was both utterly disgusting and killingly funny in equal measure - shows that times haven't really changed!

Hurrah that Jon Ronson is going, tho'!

WendyWeber · 15/09/2007 22:37

I hadn't read the mag at all - just saw the ad on the kitchen table (ew) - but have just read the Ronson column, twice, out of sheer delight - yes! yes! YES! YES!

Good riddance (apols to his fans and wife but gawd, he is a tosser)

Yes, irritating in the extreme (porn, also Ronson). But have given up getting huffy about Weekend, it's always full of shite of one sort or another. You're lucky if more than five pages of it are worth reading. No idea how that Katharine Viner woman keeps her job, let alone gets awards for this self-regarding idiocy.

policywonk · 15/09/2007 22:44

In fact, I was thinking today that there should be a broadsheet-only option on Saturdays. I don't really want any of the other bits.

Lio · 15/09/2007 22:45

Yes, I also saw this ad and thought it was quite yucky.

sugarmatches · 16/09/2007 11:48

American Apparel has been big in LA since the whole 80's revival.
Sad to see it here really.

Monkeytrousers · 17/09/2007 09:13

Haha - it was a bit pornographic. Not sure about it being 'not nice' though, not really suitable for something lying arond the house and shocking that it was so blatant.
