On BBC website, uncontrolled wildfires covering a massive area, burning over a week, and now about 3km away from Chernobyl nuclear reactor. All feels a bit apocalyptic Shock

Woah!

Gosh no I hadn’t heard that news, my news coverage is dominated by Covid and I’m limiting what I read now.
That’s awful, I know the area had been somewhat ‘reclaimed’ by nature and animals. What would happen if fire reaches the reactor site?

Geepipe · 13/04/2020 20:40

oh shit. welllll thats not good.

littleeasterbonnet · 13/04/2020 20:41

The reactor is now sealed into a giant building built around it. If radiation can't get out, then a puny little fire isn't going to get in.
I hope.

Yes I saw this too, It’s not the reactor that’s the huge issue s such, it’s the land that is so toxic when it burns it’s releasing at the moment 15x the usual amount of radiation.
Wind is blowing it toward Kiev, horrendous.

I'm at a loss after reading that

Also it says the area will suffer a huge economical loss if pripyat is burned down. So scary.
