nah, apparently they were already blind; they were submitted to a frenzied attack at the hands of the farmer's wife who viciously mutilated them with a carving knife.

One of them had been spotted earlier running up and down the kitchen clock; it is thought that the farmer's wife, a OCD sufferer, was infuriated by the thought of their dirty little feet on her pendulum.
