She had hepatitis from a blood transfusion when she had her daughter. It may have had something to with that. Very sad though

WideWebWitch · 10/09/2007 22:27

How sad, it's not old, 64 is it?

CatIsSleepy · 10/09/2007 22:27

So sad, but what a fantastic life she had - what a list of achievements. She was a true inspiration.

I also find it hard to believe that she was 64, such a vibrant woman who was prepared to do things to make a difference. A real inspiration. What ahorrible shock for her poor family and friends.

ChippyMinton · 11/09/2007 07:43

Sad news. I remember going to one of her first shops, a tiny place in Reading, and bringing my plastic bottles to be refilled with strawberry body shampoo and white musk oil. She really was way ahead of her time.

sockmonkey · 11/09/2007 07:57

Sad news. Such a shame.

Yes she caught hep C during a blood transfusion in 1971, however was only diagnosed fairly recently.
Yep, I feel she sold out when she sold to L'Óreal, but she did great things and she really started a revolution with regards to cosmetic testing. My thoughts are with her family

RubySlippers · 11/09/2007 09:07

am amazing, inspirational woman
a real trailblazer for fair trade
she was in the process of giving half her fortune away to various charities - a true philanthropist

sad news indeed

ruty · 11/09/2007 09:10

never understood why she sold out to L'Oreal but still a great figure.

MegaLegs · 11/09/2007 09:11

I had the honour of meeting Anita on several occasions. She was an amazing woman and really great fun.
My thoughts are with Gordon and her daughters. She died of a brain haemorrhage, don't know if that's linked to hepatitis.

MegaLegs · 11/09/2007 09:13

I have a book she signed for me last year - says "love 'til it hurts, Anita xx." It made me laugh when she signed it.

winnie · 11/09/2007 09:23

This is so sad. She was an inspiration. I feel for her family and friends. What a tragic loss

Amethyst8 · 11/09/2007 09:25

I went to school with Anita's daughter Sam and stayed at their home a couple of times. She was a lovely woman and made a real impact on me. I have often thought of her and been grateful for chance to have met her. Very very sad to hear this.

LIZS · 11/09/2007 09:28

very sad

stillsleeping · 11/09/2007 09:48

really sad to hear about this. not saying she didn't have her faults but i think she showed people that you could succeed commercially without completely giving up your principles. She also helped to invent the ethical consumer, and convince other companies that there was a market for products not tested on animals and was one of the first people to introduce fair trade practises.

and when she sold the body shop to l'oreal it was basically because she was retiring and knew that there was a danger of the chain being bought out after she'd left. by selling to l'oreal she contractually obliged them to continue what she had started. as far as i know.

anyway, she'll be sadly missed.

MaryAnnSingleton · 11/09/2007 09:49

very shocking and sad - do you think hepatitis might've contributed to brain haemorrhage ?
