I WAS going to say 'only in America' put when a pile of bricks and a trashed bedroom wows the 'experts' who am I to say what's good or not?

personally I think it looks like what it is - a little girls painting.

perhaps we should start pulling our little Leonardo's pictures of the fridge and running down to Sothebys

MUMINAMILLION · 29/09/2004 23:11

Hate to say it, but I actually like this!! But then again, I did have to do a critique on an art exhibition which consisted of handbags hanging from strings...........

MTS · 29/09/2004 23:12

I sort of like that too

marthamoo · 29/09/2004 23:14

I quite like the pictures - rather derivative of Pollock I have to say - but tbh, they don't strike me as typical for an average 4 year old. Every four year old I know wants to paint recognisable things - and would dismiss those as baby scribbles. I'm a bit suspicious actually, that many colours and layers of paint would take a long time to do - most 4 year olds wouldn't have the patience.

MUMINAMILLION · 29/09/2004 23:16

That's what I thought Martha - keeping colours as clean and clear as that - not easy!

colinsmommy · 29/09/2004 23:18

I like them quite a bit. But then, I'm a big Pollock fan. Wouldn't (and couldn't) pay that much for hers or Pollock's though.

What do you mean only in America, Joolstoo?

Miaou · 29/09/2004 23:29

i really like the first one. I would hang it on my wall. However I probably wouldn't admit to people that it was done by a four year old!!

stupidgirl · 29/09/2004 23:48

I think it's fantastic that she has the opportunity and freedom to express herself in this way - she is obviously using quality materials. I think art is an important thing for a child, and something which is so badly taught in schools. If only more children had the opportunity to paint like this.

The paintings are lovely and bright and colourful, but anyone who si prepared to spend that kind of money on it is crazy. Although, like Joolstoo says, considering some of the things that pass as 'art' these days, these are by comparison, pretty good.

MUMINAMILLION · 29/09/2004 23:52

Hi stupidgirl - hope you had a nice time away! Agree with you, it's great that a child can be encouraged in this way.

Chandra · 30/09/2004 01:41

I'm in shock, the paintings are great!!! I'm amazed at how good the image composition is, I used to teach art at university level and believe me, most twenty-something years old can't produce something that good unless they are trying to reproduce the style of a famous artist.

wizzysmum · 30/09/2004 01:45

Have 2 pieces of art in my sitting room. Don't think many people realise they were by dds then aged about 5 and 3. If you frame it well kids' art can look fantastic

bea · 30/09/2004 08:47

my dd painted on some canvas (bought cheap at that chaepy book place whose name i seem to have forgotten at the moment), nice big bold splodgy colourful paintings and they just look like modern art to be honest!!!!

motherinferior · 30/09/2004 09:04

I like them. And no, they don't look like dd1's charming splodges, charming though they are.

blossomhill · 30/09/2004 09:42

I really like them. Would definitely hang one up in my house

coppertop · 30/09/2004 10:50

Sorry but I'm with JoolsToo on this one. It really does look like the sort of thing my 2 boys would produce. I guess I'm just not much of a fan of modern art.

twogorgeousboys · 30/09/2004 10:53

Wonderful, especially the first one.

SoupDragon · 30/09/2004 10:55

I don't think it looks like a typical 4yos painting. Very few would fill the whole canvas with separate colours and not a brown yucky mess.

SoupDragon · 30/09/2004 10:55

"Despite prompting from her father, a giggling Marla refused to speak about her work to BBC News Online" I love that bit!!

smellymelly · 30/09/2004 11:01

I really like them, I think she has a talent, my ds could never do something like that. I'm quite impressed!
