shocking (in one village there were only 361 female births per 1,000 male births) and saddening

this is sooo sad.
but it's been happening for thousands of years. nothing new.
when a scoiety doesnt value women, thats's the sort of thing that happens. sometimes i think the ones that die are the luck ones.

MyTwopenceworth · 26/08/2007 13:36

So in that village, for every 1000 men, there are only 361 women to go around. So 639 men out of every 1000 will not marry or have kids.

Little short sighted, no?

Whenever I read about this stuff, I always wonder how on earth they expect future generations to be born.

mtp, when was society every forward thinking? or practical?
when were people? sure individual persons are intelligent, but plural usually is just a mob. with little or no practical thinking.
i'm in a very cynical mood at themoment i'm afraid.

often, the reason for girl babies non survival isnt necessary genocide as such. it's sometimes just that they arent taken care of. perhaps not fed properly? poor diet for a newborn will lead todeath. without the parents having to kill anyone. and it doesnt even have to be something that anyone has made an active decision on.

I share your cynicism and add a pinch of dispair.

It is true, they say that a crowd's IQ is inversely proportional to its size!!

Tutter · 26/08/2007 13:55

indeed, m2pw - the article also points out that china's one child policy, alongside this 'gender selection', means that an estimated 30m men will be wifeless at the end of the next decade

hmm, maybe women can become bigamists then?

MyTwopenceworth · 26/08/2007 14:00

Aren't women punished enough in that society without then making them have multiple husbands??

Multiple husbands.

need...blankie........and.......gin......

cylon · 26/08/2007 14:06

well, iwas thinking more along telines of extra sex.

MyTwopenceworth · 26/08/2007 14:08

It's not worth it. It's just not worth it.

Extra men - 1 is 5 too many most of the time!!

I have a cousin who was adopted from the Punjab region. She was given up because she is female. One of my father's sister's husband is from Kerala, so they were able to adopt her (apparently this can be hard for non-Indian nationals. It was tough enough for them!).

She's now a third-year resident physician in OB/GYN.

I thought one of the most interesting comments in this article was the observation that Western governments are worried about the testosterone loaded male dominated environment this causes and the increased risk of aggression/ warfare.

Don't know if it can be proven, but it's an interesting thought / fear.
