Outrageous. Apparently the judge said the husband was too busy working to do a community sentence, and wouldn't offend again because his wife had left him. Good grief.

It must be a prime candidate for that newish right of appeal against lenient sentences. I hope. If anyone in the judicial section gives a toss.

That is shocking. The poor woman, to have that happen and be humiliated in court by the judge suggesting the "circumstances of the marriage" somehow made it understandable.

I also noticed how the DM described her as "Mrs Read, who has reverted to her maiden name Axe" So why not call her Ms Axe, eh? No no, have a pic of her too and caption it "Elizabeth Read". They just can't help themselves can they.

that man is an obvious risk to any woman who gets involved with him. It's a disgrace and there should be an appeal against the leniency of the sentance.

Okay this is bad. Really bad. He is a total tosser who should have had a custodial sentence. It is another instance of class discrmination and I am ashamed that a Cambridge education means a get out of jail free card.

I am consoling myself with the thought that his career is effectively over - in that sort of field, no-one will employ a man with a criminal conviction for violence. His firm will squirm and either let him go now or quietly make sure he exits stage left in a few months' time.

Tell you what, given that I expect Judges to give adequate sentences for despicable crimes, and this one hasn't, I feel I'm within my rights to shove his gavel up his mysogynist arse.

I am so cross about this I have emailed the Attorney General, Baroness Scotland, about it. The AG has the power to review unduly lenient sentences. So I hope this one is drawn to her attention.

Good God, we have at long last got to the point where racism is seen as an aggravating factor, why is violence against women still somehow trivialised?

well,what did she expect?she was his wife,it was her job to make his sandwiches and iron his shirts.of course she should be punished for not doing it.and he must be a decent bloke cos he earns 90k a year.he cant be a wife-beater,they are all on the dole or working down t'pit,no?

i get the impression the judge has been around since the days when it was legal for a man to beat his wife with a stick and has just forgotten to die.

i wonder what sort of sentence he'd have got if he'd attacked a stranger in the same way?or a male friend/collegue?

On the facts as reported, he committed a Section 18 Wounding. The start off point for that is something like 2 years. Or possibly more.

Yes the appeal against leniency has been there since 1988. I should imagine this will be nooo problem to appeal. I would like to think.

DV cases are notorious for being plea-bargained down. He is rich. He engaged a good barrister.

This is why I didn't bother prosecuting either. I'm sure he would've been drunk or high on something, says he 'can't remember' - I've heard that old chestnut before... Probably doesn't want to believe what he's capable of. Now he doesn't have to face up to it he'll do it again to the next woman in his life, poor girl. This makes me so
