Gobsmacked at BBCs lack of coverage of the weather events that have been unfolding in Sheffield since 8am, thousands of businesses across the city have been letting staff leave from early afternoon, hundreds of road closures/rail services and busses stopped prior to rush hour times, it’s still hammering down with rain, hundreds have been trapped in meadow hall!! If this had been London I’m sure it would have had more than 75 seconds of coverage!!

I’ve not heard of any reports that the army are helping out

I didn't know someone has died, that's so sad.

As temperatures are going below freezing tonight, driving and walking tomorrow is going to be fun!! I've seen SCC are planning to grit though so that's positive. I am the first to slag them off for stuff but do feel they were very good at responding to reports yesterday and did their best. Meadowhall on the other hand have caused a world of pain for people!

mpsw · 08/11/2019 17:35

The military (not just the Army) have all sort of capabilities which could be useful. But they'll only deploy when the relevant civilian authorities request their assistance.

Who is in overall control for this sort of disaster? One of the emergency services? The local council? Minister for Regions?

Nononoandno · 08/11/2019 17:43

Early yesterday, the park in Sheffield was closed where a teenager sadly died in the 2007 floods due to the river flooding, I was really hoping and praying that no be would suffer the same fate in these floods 😞

I'm always surprised by how little coverage of the weather there seems to be any more: these big winter storms only seem to be covered a day after they hit. Didn't the BBC ditch its alliance with the Met Office a while ago? And it's been shit ever since.

At least the Derwent seems to have peaked. For now.

AnyMinuteNow · 08/11/2019 19:58

It looks like the rain has eased for now. Its the south next due to be hit with heavy rains.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 08/11/2019 20:14

@AnyMinuteNow yeah, and one tube will be delayed and we won’t hear the end of it 🙄😂

Ginfordinner · 08/11/2019 22:21

It was headline news on The News at Ten tonight, and quite a long news item with reporters in Doncaster and Sheffield. Apparently the river was higher than in 2007, but the flood defences held. It looked pretty scary on the news as the water was splashing over the top of the wall. I know that part of Sheffield very well, and if you saw the river at its normal level you just wouldn't believe just how high the water level had become.

CoolcoolcoolcoolcoolNoDoubt · 08/11/2019 23:42

I saw last night that the River Don was forecast to be a metre higher than back in 2007, so those flood defences did a very good job all in all!

its v high profile tjis eve on news

Nat6999 · 08/11/2019 23:53

I live in Sheffield, not far from Woodseats & it was awful last night, took me nearly 2 hours to do a 10 minute journey to rescue ds from school as the head teacher refused to close school early to enable pupils & staff to start their journey home before the buses were taken off. Ds hasn't gone to school today because he didn't manage to get on a bus even after waiting nearly an hour, buses were going through with sorry not in service on the front.

wizzler · 09/11/2019 07:24

The pictures of Rotherham yesterday were awful.. such a mess

SleepyKat · 09/11/2019 07:27

Look north was saying that the new flood defences at Sheffield saved Sheffield. Then went on to say how downstream in Rotherham there was lots of flooding.

Have Sheffield just inadvertently thrown Rotherham under the bus? They’re ok but the problem then just reappears at the next available spot? It’s ok building flood defences but that water has to go somewhere. Maybe they should have built a flood lagoon type thing rather than walls.

Ginfordinner · 09/11/2019 07:29

I agree SleepyKat they have just moved the problem further downstream.

coragreta · 09/11/2019 07:33

I think it's also partly to do with leaves blocking the drains. Apparently lots of drains are working fine once you clear leaves out of the way.

It’s a coordinated multiagency response, involving the local authority, police, fire and rescue, nhs, Environment Agency, ambulance service and other agencies as appropriate. We set up a series of command groups where we share intelligence, resources, knowledge and information to decide on the tactical and strategic response, media messages etc. For example, the Environment Agency will advise on when peak flies are expected at certain places and if this water is likely to overtop defences, and where it will go. This will help the local authority and fire and rescue service prioritise evacuations etc. This is how I spent yesterday!!

I work for the EA in this field/area. We have invested massive amounts of money in the Don defences in Sheffield and Doncaster since 2007, within the public spending constraints imposed on us by Treasury - Sheffield CC too in Sheffield. River levels yesterday in Doncaster were higher than 2007 and the catchment was saturated already.

No, we (EA) can’t do that. Many options are analysed for flood defence schemes, offline flood storage (lagoons) are great, but require a lot of land. There’s already a lot of the Don and Rother, about as much as is practical with the land available. There are big legal risks with storing water too, with big maintenance cost implications too, which are difficult to commit to in the existing funding regime we have.

BikeRunSki · 09/11/2019 07:58

To a very small extent. Highways drainage is designed to a certain level. The rainfall that has fallen in and around S Yorks recently has far exceeded that.

TheQueef · 09/11/2019 08:06

Poor Derby, Boris turned up.

Nononoandno · 09/11/2019 08:20

Check out “Sheffield forum” site, posting ”Flood Alerts Sheffield Autumn 2019”

So the EA was putting out serious flood warnings our including Meadowhall area from lunchtime. Yet at 4pm local news was saying meadowhall was still open for its annual lights switch on and concert! It took till 5pm for them to cancel it .... what a joke!

Derby was flipping terrible today and parts of Nottinghamshire, Belper is underwater. The second pic is Belper train line!

I was shocked how little coverage it's getting too, a woman has died and thousands are underwater, Ilkeston had no power for a time yesterday.

23 minutes into bbc national news and 75 seconds to cover the biblical weather unfolding in Sheffield and north today!!

Friends husband is fire service and they've all been called in off leave. Major disaster relief.

To add to it all the Major Trauma Center at QMC Notts is on Opal4 (Black watch) already so over 100% capacity.

Ginfordinner · 09/11/2019 08:35

doublebarrellednurse it was headline news on the 10 o'clock news last night and is the top item on the BBC news website.

Nononoandno · 09/11/2019 08:40

Sheffield is the most geographically diverse city in England. Lying in the eastern foothills of the Pennines, the city nestles in a natural amphitheatre created by several hills and the confluence of five rivers: Don, Sheaf, Rivelin, Loxley and Porter.

Unfortunately due to the about factors this will keep happening, the water had to go somewhere, the more Sheffield builds its flood barriers the more water will be pushed down stream, as a country we need to get better at holding water back.

Why do people keep saying this is getting no coverage?!

It's been the top story on the BBC News App since Thursday evening and was the leading story on all the news on TV/radio that I saw and heard yesterday.

Thoughts to all that have been affected by this.
