Child of our time Parys Lapper RIP

FrenchSchnoodle · 26/08/2019 23:50

I've just read that Alison Lapper' son Parys died last week. I didn't know either Alison or Parys but loved watching the t.v. prog and respected Alison for her determination to do things that others may have thought weren't possible.

He was only 19 and it simply seems far too young to go. I hope she has some great friends to support her x

The poor young man, and poor Ali. His childhood must have been quite stressful as a young carer, it's a testament to her great parenting that they had such a strong bond.

I'm so shocked to hear this and absolutely devastated for Alison. I watched child of our time from the beginning and Parys and Alison were the standout family for me, the bond was amazing.

I did too, DS1 was born the same time and I loved seeing these children grow up "with" my own.
Thoughts are with Alison and her family, absolutely tragic to lose your child at any age.

Are you daft? The statue is called Alison Lapper Pregnant. Her pregnancy was the whole point. It was displayed in Trafalgar Square from 2005-7

I think the cast was done when she was pregnant and statue made later?

I'll never forget her saying that because she didn't have the mobility to chase Parys down if he ran off she had to use the tone of her voice to control him to keep him safe. Many a time I tried this with my two and got no where and always thought of her and thinking 'respect' in awe. I'm so saddened by this news and hope she and the family can find some comfort in happy memories.

Oh no he was such a lovely boy.

They were the standout family of COOT which I was an avid watcher of.

I read Alison’s autobiography too-really inspiring.

Thoughts with her now

RIP Parys

So sorry. So young.

LifeImplosionImminent · 27/08/2019 21:05

Alison is an actual superwoman. I loved seeing her and Parys in Child of Our Time. RIP, what a heartbreaking story.

Groovee · 27/08/2019 21:12

Heartbreaking. My Dd is the same age as the Child of Our Time teenagers.

My heart goes out to Alison. She was an inspirational lady and their relationship was lovely.

Rainytowngirl · 27/08/2019 21:20

My DS was born in 2000 and I loved watching the child of our time kids grow up. So saddened to see this news. RIP Parys. Thoughts with his Mum.

I read up a bit more today about Alison and reminded myself of some of the most memorable moments from the prog. She is simply amazing and Parys came across as a wonderful young man, sensitive, caring, bright and beautiful.

I cannot imagine what she is going through and i realise she had to just 'get on with it' in terms of raising him but I hope that she is proud of how she raised him and v v proud of her beautiful boy.

I’ve just read about this.

My oldest is about a week older than he was. We were asked if we wanted to apply for child of our time when I was pregnant and watched it avidly ever since.

They were lovely. I’m so sorry for both of them.

AccioCats · 29/08/2019 18:41

I too remember them as the highlight of the series. Just incredible how she defied the odds by giving birth and raising her child. The bond between alison and Parys was so clear.... they were a gift to each other. I hope Alison knows just how much respect and admiration people hold for the two of them.

Alison has provided more info about the circumstances surrounding his death. It's v sad as he had clearly struggled for years eg being bullied at school and then taking drugs. He also moved out when he was still quite young and was placed into care.

They've both been through so much. It's desperately sad.

Oh, I didn’t realise that-how sad.

EleanorReally · 01/09/2019 11:26

oh how very sad

PerkingFaintly · 01/09/2019 11:29

Oh I'm so very sorry to see what they've been through.Sad

FrenchSchnoodle · 01/09/2019 11:39

No, I had no idea either. When you think about it I guess it's obvious that some people would tease him and he had a lot of responsibility from a young age.

Whilst Alison has gone to great lengths to explain that he was not her carer or raised with that expectation, I imagine that he would have still felt v responsible.

I hope that they both had the right support over the years. I wonder if he ever met people in a similar position to him/had people to talk to who would understand and had also experienced the levels of exposure that he faced from being on tv.

Ah God, what a story. I wondered why they weren’t featured in the last season of the programme; obviously things haven’t been right for a long time Sad
So incredibly sad.

Haworthia · 01/09/2019 12:30

Just read the news and was so shocked. I watched his birth and childhood on TV and he was an adorable little boy. He was never going to have a childhood as conventional or “easy” as his peers, but it’s so sad that his teenage years were so tormented and his life ended like this.

TheLittleDogLaughed · 01/09/2019 15:35

I know Ali and I work with people with similar impairments to her and generally the kids don't seem to have quite such a hard time as Parys so I wonder more if it is to do with being in the public eye in particular that made it difficult for him. Most disabled parents are very careful to ensure that their children are not their carers and that their children's friends are comfortable around their disability.

Skyejuly · 01/09/2019 18:27

RIP lad x

PickAChew · 01/09/2019 19:34

That poor lad. All it takes is a few absolute shits to destroy someone's life.

justasking111 · 01/09/2019 19:53

There was one mum at the beginning who struggled with her child, she was not seen in the last few. I do wonder what happened, her life was so chaotic. There was another girl who lost her mother that was very sad too.
