Here. Is it just me or should we just teach children how to spell ,like in the good old days?

There is a difference between being taught how to spell and learning word lists by rote........

TooTicky · 10/07/2007 13:53

Hell. Surely this wouldn't actually happen...

Iklboo · 10/07/2007 13:54

Aw shucks, let's just go to school for our children so the wee darlings don't get stressed about anything
Sheesh! I mean, if they want to dumb down spelling the easy stuff how are future doctors, lawyers, hell..anyine going to get on

"Deer missis iklboo

pleez cum n av yur laydee bits cut out cos u dont want no more kids innit

Luv

Dr Bloke"

GlassSlipper · 10/07/2007 13:55

I just saw this....Shocked. We should teach children more effectively, rather than change the language.

fedupwasherwoman · 10/07/2007 13:56

2 words....

dumbing down

Why do we need to simplify spelling if the children are learning better than ever before according to the annual GCSE Aand A Level results ?

like we all fall for the government's attempted spin each year of how "we shouldn't undermine/devalue the little darlings hard work and achievements".

TigerFeet · 10/07/2007 13:57

wot a gud idea

lol Iklboo, I'm with you glassslipper.
What else are we going to have to 'dumb' down if it does?
Our language may not be the easiest or most logical but with a few alterations over the years it has served us well as we have taught children to read and write. Perhaps we should concentrate on education rather than trying to change the world to suit our lack of it.

Hey, I've just had a great idea. Along with the baby bond, let's issue 5 GCSE passes to all babies born after 5th Aplril 2007. That would save billions on education, AND it would be fair!!!!

oh you beat me to it - dh just emailed me the article in a rage !!

edam · 10/07/2007 14:21

I posted on the other thread to point out these guys can't even write a proper sentence, let alone spell ("Spelling is just a bunch of memorization.")

And claiming the Initial Teaching Alphabet was a success so simplified spelling is the way to go is mad. ITA is responsible for a whole generation of people who can't spell!

clutteredup · 10/07/2007 14:29

doesn't happen often doughnuts i normally kill threads
with you edam last time they did this they really f**d up a whole age group.

Shouldn't that be "dumin" down?

tribpot · 10/07/2007 14:36

What a brilliant comment: "try explaining to a speaker of any other language when you say "I have been to Warsaw" rather than "I went to Warsaw")."

Yeah - there are NO languages that use both the perfect and the preterite except English. No siree Bob. And definitely there are none with more complex grammar than English. Ha!

I've started to get application emails at work written in quasi-txtspk. Straight into the Recycle bin.
