Whooosh · 09/07/2007 18:43

I know they said why it was dropped but flu can kill people-wouldn't be dropped then...or would it?

Sick buggers and so shoot me done-agree with Sod's Forest of Dean comment....or maybe they would do it in Norfolk?

SoupDragon · 09/07/2007 18:45

Murder has to be with intent though doesn't it?

SoupDragon · 09/07/2007 18:45

Which isn't to say it's not utterly despicable and horrifying.

CodinaKag · 09/07/2007 18:46

Whooosh · 09/07/2007 18:51

Sorry, but just cannot imagine Cod In a Kag [falls over]

edam · 09/07/2007 18:57

The charges were dropped because doctors were unable to state categorically that epilepsy didn't contribute to his death. But that argument is nonsense. Doctors often can't exclude stuff, human beings are bloody complicated and most of us over the age of 35 are living with a medical condition. Would they have dropped charges if he had high blood pressure?

FFS, the fact he had a medical condition makes what these evil little scrotes did even more reprehensible, not less. IMO those jury should have been asked to decide on the murder charge.

muppetgirl · 09/07/2007 19:00

But surely if he wasn't in the shed in the first place he probably wouldn't have died!!

Furball · 09/07/2007 19:13

i wonder whether he was actually getting his medication for his epilepsy as surely if they were withholding it that is a major contabutory factor

saadia · 09/07/2007 19:18

I saw this earlier and was appalled and sickened but actually I remember seeing a few similar stories over the past year where vulnerable people have been imprisoned and tortured. They should have got life - and it should mean life.

Blu · 09/07/2007 19:23

But isn't the definition of the difference between murder and manslaughter that they would have needed t be intending to kill him for it to be murder? Bad enough that they cold-bloodedly intended to torture and imprison him (and yes, I think life would be appropriate for that!) but if they didn't mean for him to die, then it isn't technically murder.

But I could be wrong.

edam · 09/07/2007 19:27

I think you are right wrt intent Blue, but the decision to drop murder charges is attributed to the doctors being unable to definitively rule out epilepsy.

Furball, I wondered about withholding medicine too. Doesn't say anything about it in the story, but they don't sound as if they cared too much for his welfare. And if they did withhold medicine, that on its own is attempted murder in my book.

I have epilepsy, btw, so it's particuarly chilling to discover that you can be let off murder charges if your victim is unfortunate enough to have this condition. Nice.

muppetgirl · 09/07/2007 19:29

Really think this is a case of how the americans do it
1st degree murder
2nd degree murder etc

What did they think that keeping a man with epilesy in a shed, periodically feeding him, torturing him and burning him, would do?

tegan · 09/07/2007 19:31

This took place 5 miles from my house and I went to chool with the girl involved so have a guess at how shocked I was to find out about this last year.
