Madeleine McCann info shown before Shrek, anyone else cross about this?

WideWebWitch · 01/07/2007 20:00

I was. I have chosen NOT to tell my nearly 4yo about this. I haven't discussed it in detail with 9yo ds either I CHOOSE not to put the news on in our house. I really resent this being shoved at my children before a U cert movie. Completely inappropriate imo.

If they did sanction the ad being broadcast before Shrek it would make me lose respect for them (NB not sympathy, just respect)

Enid · 02/07/2007 11:45

from another webiste:

"I've just been to see a film at the local cinema and just before the movie started there was a 'Find Madeleine McCann' ad, voiced by (I think) Zoe Wanamaker. Two things disturb me a) if some-one is still holding the child, I fear that all this hype and publicity might panic them into a truly drastic act
b) the ad. referred to Madeleine as 'this beautiful child'. Why the adjective? What about all the other kids who are missing, some of whom might be considered by some as less physically prepossessing?
I felt very uncomfortable, somehow."

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/07/2007 11:46

Well, at the end of the day (as they say! I hate that phrase!) these are all just opinions and they differ.

The ad is currently being screened (for now) and that's that.

Hathor · 02/07/2007 11:48

Well no. Now I know about it from this thread I will not go to see Shrek if they are screening it. I will wait for the DVD.

BenStiller · 02/07/2007 11:48

not the nspcc old chestnut again - i beg to seriously differ

SoupDragon · 02/07/2007 11:49

"The ad is currently being screened (for now) and that's that."

Not really "and that's that" because I will complain vociferously should my children and I be subjected to it when we go to see Shrek this week and I will report it to the ASA. I would do the same if they broadcast an NSPCC cruelty ad or an ad appealing for information on terrorists following something like the London bombings. All are subjects inappropriate for a children's film.

Enid · 02/07/2007 11:49

well it could be?

same emotive claptrap

persephonesnape · 02/07/2007 12:08

I did think i was teh only person conceerned about this, so thank you for posting the thread. I emailed the odeon on saturday and will let you know when i receieve a response.

I don't want a repeat performance in two weeks with order of the phoenix and I've told them that I'd rather go to a different cinema if they intend to continue showing this infomercial.

LowFatMilkshake · 02/07/2007 12:19

It is a bit off. My DD is also know as Madi, and when a good friends young 5yr old son was watching the news saw the the thing on Maddie McGann and had hysterics as he thought it was 'his' Madi. It was only when his dad offered to phone us up so he could speak to her that he calmed down.

I'm all for keeping the memory fresh in peoples minds, but forcing it on young children, who's parents may have made the decision to shield them from such news is wrong. At the very least there should have been some notice before you went in the cinema so you were prepared and could go to the loo at that time or something.

I recently saw a more adult film, although I think still a 12 and they also had the clip.

bookwormmum · 02/07/2007 12:31

LMF - we had a similar event as well. One of my Mum's friends is called Laura and we saw a programme where a girl called Laura was sadly killed by a crocodile in Africa whilst she was doing some charity work there. Dd wouldn't rest until she'd spoken to Mum's friend herself on the phone .

I'm not against the ad being shown per se - in films designed for older children/adults but to choose a film like Shrek seems unncessary to me.

laneydaye · 02/07/2007 12:31

Hi, i dont think its at all a bad thing and certainly wouldnt stop the kids from seeing it because of the ad. Keep it in the public eye anyway you can i say!

truepenny · 02/07/2007 12:32

According to the media the Mc Canns themselves chose not to tell their twins that their sister had been snatched from her bed obviously wanting to protect them from the same harsh truths many of us prefer to shield our kids from. I doubt they would be in favour of it being aired prior to a childrens film.

contentiouscat · 02/07/2007 12:34

Shiny perhaps our opinion is in the minority or perhaps those who disagree are just the most vocal!

Ultimately if it does offend that many people then they should complain and it should be moved to before PG films only.

I suspect the majority will just complain about it at home then not do anthing about it because their child has already seen it.

furReal · 02/07/2007 12:36

our local newsagent has taken down the Madeleine poster because of complaints. I don't know a single person who has downloaded the poster, and everyone I know that has received it by email has deleted it. I think a lot less people are paying attention to this campaign than aren't. And my ISP now considers madeleine emails to be spam and they are labelled as such.

I think the fact that this campaign is now about money is what annoys some people. The McCanns are wealthy, more so than many of us, and there is a lot of feeling that them setting up a fund and asking for money is wrong when what they earn and how much they paid for their house is fairly public knowledge.

binkleandflip · 02/07/2007 13:02

oh-oh...

RubberDuck · 02/07/2007 13:09

My ds1 is sensitive to noise and finds the darkness of cinemas very scary. I haven't taken him to the cinema for over a year (after we had to leave half an hour in to Chicken Little - in retrospect a bad choice of film for a sensitive child).

Had toyed with taking him to see Shrek Three though as it's been a year, he might be able to cope with it now (he's 6) and he's loved the previous two Shreks.

So glad we couldn't go this weekend after all and I learned about this ad. We'll be another family waiting for it to come on to DVD.

Ellbell · 02/07/2007 13:13

Why is the volume so loud in cinemas, RD? My dds don't seem to mind too much, but it really bothers me.

binkleandflip · 02/07/2007 13:14

Ellbell!! It's all part of the dolby experience, tsk!!

Ellbell · 02/07/2007 13:16

Grumble, grumble, grumble... Gawd, I am miserable, middle-aged hag, aren't I?

ELF1981 · 02/07/2007 13:20

Can I ask who is funding these adverts?
Who has paid for them to be made? Who has paid the cinemas to show them (as they will be losing revenue from not showing other adverts).

I disagree with this tbh. I agree with a post a while ago (I think sobernow) that my dd does not need to knwo that children can be snatched from their beds.

RubberDuck · 02/07/2007 13:24

Ellbell: don't know My poor little lad sits there in my lap with his hands over his ears to try and block the noise out. And that's before we get to any scary bits in the film.

I wish they'd make the matinee performances half the volume - but then I'd guess people would complain about the noise the kids made ... can't win really

chocolateteapot · 02/07/2007 13:26

I am massively relieved that DH didn't take DD & DS to the cinema to see Shrek 3 as planned, I would have gone absolutely ballistic if they had seen this before the film. Like many others on here I have chosen to shield them from what has happened as much as I can. DD did become aware of it and was really worried. She's 8 but still has horrendous nightmares. I managed to calm her down at the time and she hasn't mentioned it since thank goodness but I don't want her reminded.

My DS is coming up for 4 and he would have been really upset by this as well. As someone said further down the thread, children of this age process this in different ways. I made the mistake of discussing moving house with my Mum in front of him the other day without having talked it through with him first. He listened intently then his eyes filled up with tears and his bottom lip quivered as he said " I don't want you all to go and leave me here on my own" Hearing about a child taken from her bed would upset him a lot. I don't want him to consider that being taken from his bed is something that could happen. There is absolutely no need for him to know and to have this advert running before a U cert film to a cinema full of children is absolutely outrageous. Off to email my local cinema now.

Loobyloo22 · 02/07/2007 13:26

I have to admit it did strike me as odd when I saw the advert. I think that people are very aware of Madeleine in this country and ~I can't see the ad being of any benefit. I know that children have been very upset and confused by Madeleines abduction and this ad only serves to surface those emotions at what is supposed to be a happy family day out.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 02/07/2007 13:30

Where's OliveOil and her line?

This is simply going around in circles with folk trying to batter each other into submission.

I dont think I'd be angry, tbh. Lifes too short and there are more important things.

Enid · 02/07/2007 13:37

lol

isnt that what mumsnet does though vvvq
