I was. I have chosen NOT to tell my nearly 4yo about this. I haven't discussed it in detail with 9yo ds either I CHOOSE not to put the news on in our house. I really resent this being shoved at my children before a U cert movie. Completely inappropriate imo.

Shiny, how do we know that everything being done, this flood of publicity, of every minutae, IS going to be the best thing to get her safely returned? Perhaps a softer approach might have been the way to go? I dont know.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/07/2007 11:22

Oh crikey, this is one of those occasions when I just can't get my heads around people's reactions. I must be odd. I must, really.

Madeleine is British.. so all that can be done IS being done here in Britain. A great many British people travel; a lot. I would think that it would be a lot harder for Madeleine's parents to instigate the same being done in Spanish cinemas, but lets hope that it can be done there too.. and that Spanish parents don't camapaign over it.

Hathor · 02/07/2007 11:23

I will phone and check with the cinema before subjecting dc to that. Agree that this is overkill, and will not be the way to bring her back.

binkleandflip · 02/07/2007 11:24

Also, has there been any actual evidence she was snatched from her bed as opposed to wandering out of the room/getting lost/picked up etc?

It's rather sick to confront small children with these 'facts' when we dont even know them to be true. they probably are but nobody seems to know what actually happened as they have no evidence from what I'm aware, only speculation.

Oblomov · 02/07/2007 11:24

I agree with furReal, as I have posted before. People are just sick of it. They had more empathy with sarah Payne, Holly & Jessica.
My work has firewalled e-mails now.

Enid · 02/07/2007 11:25

I would like to think that I wouldn't want to frighten young children even if this awful thing happened to my own family.

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/07/2007 11:25

What would BE a softer approach?

What a shame people are "irriated" by the concept of somebody's missing child. Oh well, it it's annoying enough to have provoked such a reaction, let's hope her features are firmly imprinted on their minds so that even as they block emails preventing them from having to look at her, they remember what she looks like.

the campaign is no longer simply to do with raising awareness about Madeleine's disappearance; it's now to do with raising funds. The McCanns, poor souls, have to keep the campaign going, and to do that they need ££.

Run the ad in any other screening, absolutely, but not in one where children will be present. (I saw Tell No One in an Odeon on Sat, the ad didn't run )

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/07/2007 11:26

But we, as parents, are in a position to explain things to our children in a way that they can accept without being frightened. That's our "job" as parents surely.

More frightening for a child to see/hear about a situation and not have mum explain it to them and formulate their own ideas.

Enid · 02/07/2007 11:27

sorry but it wont be all I think about when I am on holiday either

bakedpotato · 02/07/2007 11:27

fgs, it's dark and noisy in a cinema -- not a good place for a sensitive discussion.

Enid · 02/07/2007 11:27

yes thats why we are pisse doff about the cinema ad

Hathor · 02/07/2007 11:27

Yes Shiny, but she is only one missing child.
Many children have gone missing before and since. Perhaps the government should put out information films on all of them.
They used to have pictures on milk cartons of missing people. Guess some of them helped.

Totally disagree - having mum and dad acknowledge their fears is right absolutely - but I would argue that we should avoid implanting fear in their minds wherever possible.

DaisyMOO · 02/07/2007 11:28

Surely the whole story is only unknown to people who've been living in caves and highly unlikely to be going to the cinema anyway. If the aim is simply to remind people that she's still missing and what she looks like then why not just put a picture of her on the screen for 20 seconds with a phone number to call if you have information then any questions from children arising as a result can be handles as the parents wish.

Enid · 02/07/2007 11:29

yes there are tragic posters in front of TEscos with lots of missing children

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/07/2007 11:29

Whose children have be scared by this? Honestly.

Not whose children have asked.. whose have shown actual fear?

What do you do about the news.. never watch it? (Re terrosism etc?) Do you rush into the homes of friends in advance of your children and hide their newspapers, with all their horrid front page images? Do you pre-warn everyone your child comes into contact with not to mention any of the "nasty stuff" happening in the world, within earshot of your child?

It doesn't seem realistic to me.

DaisyMOO · 02/07/2007 11:29

When I say 'people' I mean adults, obviously children may still be blissfully unaware.

binkleandflip · 02/07/2007 11:29

My post was to shiny, btw

Enid · 02/07/2007 11:30

no I dont watch theh news in front of them as a rule

we watch newsround together

yes we discuss things as they come up

we dont get a newspaper and they arent intersted in them anyway

CodHun · 02/07/2007 11:31

yes lol one of the mad ghouls ont eh original thread dd had night mares
i ahd ot laugh tbh

binkleandflip · 02/07/2007 11:31

It's not realistic and so it's fitting with a child's view of the world. Why should they have to learn so early what a crappy place world they live in? Why cant they enjoy its beauty first?

ShinyHappyPeopleHoldingHands · 02/07/2007 11:31

"yes thats why we are pisse doff about the cinema ad "

Well, couldn't you then explain it you your child to prevent the formulation of any worrying ideas Enid?
