It shows a little foetus at 21 weeks, being operated on in the womb (amazing by itself) to cure it of spina bifida and it pops its little hand out and grabs the surgeons finger. The op was a success and he was born a healthy boy. The photo made me weep. If I could work out how to post it I would - can we post photos on here?

wow

that photo was taken in 1999 ..I'm amazed I've never seen it before.

Shouldn't the baby have been sedated/anaesthetised (sp!) if the surgeon was operating on his spine? Just hope it didn't hurt the little one, if not it's a fantastic picture

musicianswidowAKAmumofmonsters · 29/06/2007 22:43

what happens to the amniotic fluid when they do that? and what do they replace it with?

glitterati · 29/06/2007 22:45

that's what i thought too but seemed to turn out ok....the mother was an obstetric nurse apparently so she must have understood......

In Emkanas link it does say the baby was anethesthetised and would not have been able to hold the hand (i.e. it most have been'posed/staged'). The photographer aparently disagrees, says the uterus shuddered and out popped the hand...

musicianswidowAKAmumofmonsters · 29/06/2007 22:49

its notholding his hand though is it? its on top of his finger in a sort of fist
