Those 800,000 people who are not being paid because Trump is rowing with Congress.
My heart goes out to them.
How could you manage with mortgages to be paid, food to be bought, homes to be heated, children's needs met ?
It is appalling.

After the blank payslip on Friday, I hope none of them turn up on Monday, or they work to rule at the very least.

(I hear of compulsory unpaid overtime, which is surely a breach of the 13th Amendment.)

Technically those employed in what is considered crucial roles HAVE to work for free during shut down. (Some are also forbidden from taking other paid work during shut down as it is considered gross misconduct as they need to go back to work at a moments notice).

What is worse those that have been forced to work may not even get back pay since both congress AND trump would have to agree to pay back pay (I can picture trump spitting his dummy out if he caves in first and refuses to sign it).

Some of the Republican politations are mocking the workers asking why they are going to food banks for food rather then taking out bank loans (at bloody high interest rates). Hopefully after this debarcule government workers will insist that something like this never happens again and force through a change in policy.

My BiL and SiL (DH brother and sister) Have been suffering massively my SiL has to work for free and BiL is contract bound NOT to find other paid work they all have children. Thank god MiL is fairly well off and is supporting them with money but it is massively unfair that as a pensioner she is having to bail out her children due to the whims of a fucking manchild and for such a shit governmental system why normal workers are at the whims of partisan politics.

(Gross misconduct as it could be seen as bribe taking/ corruption rules or breach of contract as they need to return to work instantly )

Yes its that silly. (sorry for two posts i accidentally pressed post rather then preview)
