Racism.

It has started to become acceptable to be racist again. It was always there, but we were making some progress shunning it. We ar given messages - some subtle, some not so subtle - that it is ok to be racist. Brexit made it fashionable to be racist and islamophobic along with a whole load of other distasteful stuff.

Raheem Sterling has to deal with a lot of racism in football. He then has to keep highlighting racism to teach the wilfully ignorant. Why is racism still so acceptable in this day and age?

Brexit has absolutely nothing to do with racism!!

Haggisfish · 11/12/2018 19:59

Brexit does. It allowed some people to air and justify their racist views about ‘others’. Not all brexit supporters are racist, but I bet most racists were pro brexit. It’s like the Scottish referendum stirred up utter hatred towards the English from a section of Scottish society. They had probably always felt it, but were socially ‘restricted’ in terms of airing their views.

greendale17 · 11/12/2018 19:59

I disagree, my ethnic friends have experienced racism since Brexit was announced.

Haggisfish · 11/12/2018 19:59

Until the referendum when they felt able and emboldened to air their previously unacceptable views. Same with brexit.

Imissgmichael · 11/12/2018 20:03

My husband and adult children have not noticed an increase in racism since Brexit.

Haggisfish · 11/12/2018 20:05

But many others have.

Blueshells · 11/12/2018 20:08

I am mixed race.

I had plenty more abuse in the 80s/90s than I've ever had in this decade.

StraightDownTheMiddle · 11/12/2018 20:20

Blueshells, I am not saying, that things are worse than they were in 80s/90s. However, racism is now better hidden under various guises rather than how blatant it used to be. Recently though, it is becoming more acceptable to start being explicitly racist again.

Personally I think Brexit has everything to do with racism. Everything.

Heratnumber7 · 11/12/2018 20:36

But the people who mostly experience racism are not Europeans. Europeans are white, by and large.

Imissgmichael · 11/12/2018 20:41

Of course Electra everyone who voted to leave did so because of racism. Give your head a wobble.

StraightDownTheMiddle · 11/12/2018 20:50

Heratnumber7, I wasn’t actually intending to make this thread about brexit, however, brexit was definitely a factor in making racism more acceptable. Racist and religiously aggravated crime spiked after the referendum.

Brexit was not all to do with racism, but if Racist Steve voted Brexit because he doesn't like Asians (Steve is also rather stupid), he might think that 17 million+ people think like he does. Steve may then be encouraged to start voicing his feelings, thinking that the majority of people agree with him. Steve finds people who do agree with him. They are then encouraged to start shouting abuse at asian people in the street...

So, no. Not every leave voter is or was racist. But I bet every racist voted leave.

And for the poster who said Europeans aren't racially abused- many Polish and Romanian people would like a word.

whatswithtodaytoday · 14/12/2018 14:06

I think the internet is playing a huge part. People who are a bit racist are finding people like them online saying awful things, for example on Britain First Facebook, local news comment sections etc.

Ragaroo · 14/12/2018 14:18

Whoever is being racist "because of Brexit", was probably racist BEFORE Brexit. Just a thought?!!

Sethis · 14/12/2018 14:21

The point isn't "Racist because of Brexit".

The point is "Was always Racist, but since Brexit, can now spout off about it to others without instantly being told they're full of shit"

StraightDownTheMiddle · 15/12/2018 16:21

Just came across this news article.

www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-dorset-46578782

These sort of shocking racist incidents that are occurring more and more frequently.

Moussemoose · 15/12/2018 16:32

Brexit has allowed people to express racist views because they believe 17 million other people support them. It is no longer a dirty secret to be kept hidden when so many others support them.

ByTheSea · 15/12/2018 16:35

Brexit and Trump have emboldened the racists to think it's acceptable. It's not!
