I might regret posting this but although I am anti-abortion for myself, I am pro-choice, I think for some women it is something that is needed and the Cardinal's comments have gone way over the top and more people will be devestated by his comments than supportive.
I know Catholics are anti-abortion, who doesn't? But sometimes I think they could be a little more restrained.

Story here

No, it didn't. Outrageously insensitive I thought.

edam · 01/06/2007 10:34

Daft comment but he has a record of making stupid comments and then contradicting himself. Doesn't seem to be the sharpest tool in the box.

I also thought it was very, very insensitive to the parents whose children were murderd at Dunblane.

foxinsocks · 01/06/2007 10:34

although at the end, when Cardinal Cormac Murphy O' Connor was saying 'all life is sacred' in the eyes of the Catholic church, I couldn't help but think of 'every sperm is sacred'

I suppose you could say they are Catholics - you'd expect this point of view but I thought the Dunblane comparison was completely unnecessary.

expatinscotland · 01/06/2007 10:34

As if women should really take advice about their reproductive systems from a celibate-for-life male nut job.

cylonbabe · 01/06/2007 10:38

expat, well said.

Grrrr · 01/06/2007 10:39

It just makes me even sadder to think about poverty/overpopulation issues in some third world countries where catholic charities operate, the spread of aids due to their wilful misinformation about the use of condoms and unwanted children being born into a potential life of abuse and neglect in any country of the world just because a foetus must not be aborted according to the catholic church's teachings.

I gave up on Catholicism many years ago.

expatinscotland · 01/06/2007 10:40

Same here, Grrr. I gave up believing in God years ago, too.

Chirpygirl · 01/06/2007 10:41

That's what I meant edam, not only is he upsetting any woman who has had to have an abortion for whatever personal reason, but the Dunblane parents didn't need to hear that.

Am glad it isn't just me, IL's said I was totally over-reacting when I started swearing at the paper yesterday because he is a priest and what does he know?

Well, he should know fucking better.

I was brought up a strict Roman Catholic and things like this (how everything is black and white) is part of the reason I gave up on religion.

All my wonderful responses are put into the shade by what expat said.

My feelings exactly.

CrispyNoodles · 01/06/2007 10:47

I was incensed by his comments.
Must be easier to make stupid, trite, hurtful and damning comments when you are condemning a life choice that you personally will never have to make.
No wonder the numbers of people attending church is declining - it has no relevance to the real world.

nogoes · 01/06/2007 10:49

The catholic church's view on a lot of things is a little suspect if you ask me.

Ceolas · 01/06/2007 10:50

What got me more than anything was saying that the politicians shouldn't be allowed to receive communion.

I'm sure there are plenty of priests and other members of the church happily receiving communion with bigger skeletons in their closets.

Ceolas · 01/06/2007 10:50

And we are catholics fwiw

MrsBond · 01/06/2007 11:00

Outrageous to compare Abortion to Dunblane. Totally insensitive to Dunblane families.

Shows how Catholic Church is out of touch with modern life - too busy eyeing uo the choir boys {shock}

MrsBond · 01/06/2007 11:00

I mean

expatinscotland · 01/06/2007 11:02

'I'm sure there are plenty of priests and other members of the church happily receiving communion with bigger skeletons in their closets.'

Including former Father Gerry Nugent, the priest at the church where 23-year-old Polish immigrant Angelika Kluk was savagely raped and murdered.

Father Gerry is now facing charges for obstructing the course of justice and lying in court.

He's admitted, too, to having sex with prostitutes.

Tamum · 01/06/2007 11:06

I thought it was an utterly vile thing to say, completely unforgiveable.

Ceolas · 01/06/2007 11:16

he was the one who came to mind first, expat.

expatinscotland · 01/06/2007 11:17

Exactly, Ceolas. I sometimes wonder if he might not have played a part in her death.

Probably not directly, as it appears Peter Tobin may have also been involved in a number of other crimes and possibly even the Bible John murders, but .

CountTo10 · 01/06/2007 11:18

Just another reason why the catholic church totally repulses me

Ceolas · 01/06/2007 11:18

I have stopped putting money into the collection on sundays lest a penny of it goes his way.
