Mars products no longer suitable for vegetarians

Story here .

Why would they do this? They'll be cutting out part of their target group as vegetarians (and presumably vegans) will no longer be able to eat their chocolate. Also seems odd to change when their products are perfectly OK as they are.

I can't eat a lot of Mars type things as they contain products sourced from wheat. I wonder if now they contain cow I will be able to.

I doubt vegans could ever eat them as they are mostly made from milk chocolate.

I am a strict vegetarian but to be honest this won't affect us as we didn't eat it anyway some of the products have egg in and we only eat free range organic egg so we mainly eat yummy green & blacks!

But like you say they are cutting out alot of their target group not just vegetarians but some religions don't eat foods which have animal rennet in. as well as the other animal by products that are used in alot of food like gelatine. I have never really understood why some companies use these products and others don't??

There is no need for them to switch ingredients - these days people are much more aware of what they are eating this is just a backward step - silly!!

nooooooooooo!

minstrels are affected too??! !!!

SpawnChorus · 14/05/2007 10:53

Twix and Bounty??!! Noooooooooooo!!!! Idiots

DragonFaerie · 14/05/2007 10:55

Actually, don't know why I'm complaining, it will strengthen my resolve to only buy fairtade chocolate

MarsLady · 14/05/2007 11:07

Just to reassure you all..... lemon drizzle cake is still fully suitable!

edam · 14/05/2007 11:18

Hurrah to Lemon Drizzle Cake. Boo to Masterfoods (name sounds v. dodgy too, do they have a secret plan to overthrow the government or something?).

Agree will encourage me to live up to only buying Fairtrade, though, after seeing the child slavery thread. Horrifying.

I can't believe this story - I'm so miserable. Stupid company.

Aero · 14/05/2007 11:24

I'm not a vegetarian by any means, but the word 'rennet' in itself could put one off!

What a very odd thing to do when there's no need!

babygrand · 14/05/2007 12:57

If you go to the Materfoods website, you can send them your comments about this ridiculous decision.

JodieG1 · 14/05/2007 13:14

I had an email about this a couple of weeks ago as I had previously emailed them asking which of their products were suitable for vegetarians. It did make me wonder why they'd changed ingredients but I think the email they sent me said they had changed production company so that would explain why.

Bump for this story tonight, as it really shocked me.

fimac1 · 15/05/2007 09:20

Ohh I had missed this - thanks - my dd is allergic to all bovine products - yet more foodstuff to cross of the list
