So sad to read about this young mum and her struggle with depression and illness.

She felt ‘pressured’ into finding work and the risk of losing benefits played on her mind.

I hope & pray that some people regret voting for the tories but I doubt it. People seem to vote for what they believe to be in their own best interests.

As dar as i can see now that im claiming UC this hasnt happened

It hasn't. The Treasury insisted on a far quicker rate of benefit withdrawal than IDS wanted. If it had been implemented as per the original plans you would definitely benefit from working. As it stands some people do better in work, others do better without.

by giving themselves pay rises

The government do not give themselves pay rises. MPs and ministers have no say in their own pay.

Fucking disgusting that a so-called developed country’s benefit system is such a mess that this poor girl ended her life, it’s shameful, but no one in authority actually cares and sadly this kind of tragedy will continue

The government seem to interested in turning everyone against the poorest in this country.

This.

Evidenced in the first few posts trying to blame the lady/ her GP/ mental health services, and ignoring the fact that the support services that should have been in place for this lady have been decimated by this government.

OldHag1 · 22/04/2018 23:10

Smearton that thread has been deleated.

Bombardier I agree this poor lady was failed by ‘the system’ in so many ways. How on earth can we stop this from happening to other people? There were calls to halt or delay the rolling out of UC but as usual it was ignored.

OP posts:
OldHag1 · 22/04/2018 23:15

I just went to google to see if there was a petition against UC there are a few.

I read that UC will be paid for a limited time to job seekers. What happens then? That if true is really frightening.

Aparantly in a 5 week month it will take people over the limit they can earn in a month so more benefits will be lost.

The rich get richer the poor are getting poorer.

prh47bridge It doesnt matter who gives them pay rises they get them, while reducing other peoples income whatever it may be benefits especially,

Sanctioning is morally wrong. Benefits as I understand it are the minimum you can survive on if your sanctioned they take every penny away from you and you are left with nothing, what are you supposed to do if you are sanctioned for 3 years?

Whatever it says on the government website, they do not give you 100% advances in benefit. It is generally up to around 60% of what you'd get, they only advance for what they consider allowable expenses (basically food, electric, gas) - any debts or other bills you're expected to rearrange with the creditors. Most other items are not considered necessary essentials that can't be delayed until your benefit is sorted. You have to itemise what it is needed for and they calculate a percentage they will cover. Not sure if the UC budget is done the same way as old style Crisis Loans, but I've gone through the Decision Makers Guide thoroughly and most of it is very similar if not exactly the same. If budgets work the same way, you can be turned down of it is near the end of the month, just because there's no money left in their budget for the month. Even if you fulfil the criteria. You also have to show that there's nowhere else you could borrow the money from. If you have a credit card - no advance. Family who could lend money? No advance. Food bank who could offer parcels? Etc.

It is utterly shit. I have worked within the old system and former colleagues tell me the UC system and the advance system is far, far worse than the old one. I have spent almost 9 weeks with only £80odd quid in child benefit to feed us, clothe us, keep the metered lights on and keep us warm in December. An advance was refused as I hadn't yet been for my first JSA interview. I couldn't attend d an interview for almost two weeks as the jobcentre was fully booked up! When I made a complaint as my children would literally starve or die of a medical condition that requires electricity to be available, I was advised they couldn't help and I should phone Social Services and ask them to help.

I am an intelligent articulate person who has worked within the system, knows exactly what to say, what buzzwords to use on their forms and who to ring, I know the relevant legislation and their own guidance policies. What hope is there for anyone else?

Roomba · 23/04/2018 12:05

I couldn't believe it when my ex colleagues told me that hardship payments are loans now. Frankly it is a testament to British fortitude and toughness that there aren't a lot more people killing themselves over this. What happened to our legal obligations to protect the weakest and most vulnerable in our society? The United Nations were quite correct when they stated that it breaches international convention and is a breach of human rights law.

HelenaDove · 23/04/2018 16:13

Ive said this before but it needs saying again....................i can see a lot of people going into the sex industry.

Apparently child maintenance is counted now too.

HelenaDove · 23/04/2018 16:19

Another thing though Smeaton.................UC claimants are/will have to keep taking time off from their jobs to keep going down to the JC or CAB to sort the mess out.

Cant see employers being happy with that but if the same employers voted for it then i dont have any sympathy for them.

My sympathy lies with the employees.

PoisonousSmurf · 23/04/2018 16:21

The evil Tory plan seems to be working Angry

lovemylover · 23/04/2018 17:04

If you apply and the papers and forms are lost you have to reapply. and your claim is only counted from the second claim, even if its their fault
Which delays payments even more, and NO backpay
Universal credit hasnt fully reached my are yet, so some people are on it and some still on old benefits, who are going to get a shock when their benefit changes

crunchymint · 24/04/2018 13:43

Its interesting to read what advisers are supposed to say at initial appointments. I have found that every advisor, although trying to be helpful, has told me different things.

crunchymint · 24/04/2018 13:44

UC claimants are not supposed to need to take time off work. My job centre is open at weekends and in the evening for claimants.

lovemylover · 24/04/2018 18:28

Just been on the news ,more and more people turning to food banks
Doesnt this tell this Government anything? Sad
But according top thje Government more people in work Angry

Tomselleckhaskindeyes · 24/04/2018 21:07

Over 80,000 people have died because of the benefits system (or lack of) in the U.K. That is truly heartbreaking. May they RIP

I'm still grateful to the government.....just think where we'd be without any benefits at all.

I certainly wouldn't want to live like a 3rd world country.
