So sad to read about this young mum and her struggle with depression and illness.

She felt ‘pressured’ into finding work and the risk of losing benefits played on her mind.

R.I.P. Amy

I feel that way every day, the only difference is I don't have what it takes to actually do it.

RIP Amy.

TriHard27 · 18/04/2018 21:42

Bless her, it sounds like she had been struggling for a while but only managed to engage enough with services to get a sick note a few weeks ago.

The nature of depression makes people avoidant and the nature of benefits is evidence provided by deadlines or no entitlement. Disastrous combination for some people.

DownstairsMixUp · 18/04/2018 21:48

How many more? RIP.

lovemylover · 18/04/2018 21:49

So sorry to read this,it doesnt surprise me at all,
People are waiting for weeks without money, my own son included, having to go to food banks etc,
It is disgaceful, not everyone has people to help out or any support
This Government just dont care
RIP Amy

tissuesosoft · 18/04/2018 21:50

The thing is her GPs should have a responsibility to assess her mental health when she saw them as stated in the article. If the fit note was given earlier there would have been a lot more flexibility about finding work.

tissuesosoft · 18/04/2018 21:51

And universal credit offer 100% advances now before the first payment so no one is having to wait for money

RoseyOldCrow · 18/04/2018 21:52

RIP Amy. So sad.

TriHard27 · 18/04/2018 21:58

Agreed. Without that medical evidence the dwp would have pressed on regardless as they wouldn’t have known she wasn’t currently fit for work. It sounds like she was already known to mental health services and it also mentioned that she saw her gp for other issues but nobody seemed to realise until too late that she wasn’t coping. Poor woman and her poor little boy.

They can offer more ey upfront. But they don’t have to. They often refuse to.

BettyBaggins · 18/04/2018 22:44

Rest her wee soul. The management of the benefits system is an utter shame and disgrace.

lovemylover · 18/04/2018 23:29

tissuesosoft* you are wrong, they dont give you an advance enough to last a few more weeks, and then not enough to pay bills etc with,
My son has only just got sorted out properly since Christmas,
Universal Credit is just being rolled out here, he was on ESA and they stopped it, he is on sick and took ages to swap from esa to UC and get it sorted properly
Even the DWP dont know how it works, its disgusting

tissuesosoft · 19/04/2018 05:45

I’m not wrong- it’s a 100% advance of what the system has automatically calculated the entitlement to be.

lovemylover · 19/04/2018 07:11

Well I know what my situation is and he has been waiting for a long time to get some money through.including housing benefit

lovemylover · 19/04/2018 07:14

tissuesosoft · 19/04/2018 07:45

Has your son asked about an advance?

tissuesosoft · 19/04/2018 07:46

Or a backdate claim request?

Even if uc hadn't come in the benefit system previous to it had its problems and issues

There's obvs more to do his situation. You lose/change money when a child starts school. And are expected to find work. That's how it's always been.

KittTheCar · 19/04/2018 08:33

If someone had no money for food etc it should be be up to them to know magic words like backdate claim and advance.

The people who know the rules should advise people what they need to do and assist with paperwork if necessary. Not sit there staring at them closed mouthed until they say the magic words for god's sake.

KittTheCar · 19/04/2018 08:33

*shouldn't

KittTheCar · 19/04/2018 08:37

Anyway one off the books.

I don't know if it will cost the state more in the longer run given that she had a young child.

lovemylover · 19/04/2018 08:37

tissuesosoft he has just last week had housing benefit backdated, and he was loiving on £40 a week tax credits that have now finished,
When he went for an interview that he asked for,he was told " you can live on £40 cant you" he said could you? no reply
It is disgusting,
On the other hand, i have a grandson who sadly is on drugs and alcohol, who has received 3 seperate p[ayments of first £3000 .then another of £1000, and recently another of £4000, why i dont know,he says its back pay of pip,
I am disgusted that someone who has self harmed, gets so much help,
I feel ashamed for him, and to think its one of my own that i am critisising, but although i know that anyone with mental health problems needs as much help as possible, my son and also his brother, who has a chronic health problem are struggling, and have worked all their lives, up to having health problems now are having to struggle, [both sons twins] have same health issues
He got a small advance, but nowhere near enough to pay bills etc
