Vegan baby dies at 6 weeks old

I was shocked to read in the Mirror this morning about a baby who died at six weeks old weighing just 3lbs after his vegan parents fed him just soya milk and apple juice. Apparently they didn't want to compromise their vegan principles by feeding him formula. Would breastfeeding that poor child have compromised their principles?
I have a vegan friend who has never fed her children animal products but she breastfed them till they were two and they're perfectly healthy and happy.
The stupidity of some people is astonishing.

I hope they are prosecuted...

Were there no HV's aware of the situation?

This was in America by they way, not that it makes any difference. presumably they didn't seek medical help when their baby was turning to skin and bones.

It doesn't explain very much, does it? Like why they didn't bf or seek help, or notice that he was presumably thin, ill and listless?

I don't think this is to do with them being vegan, I think it is to do with them being dysfunctional in some way, whether cruel or simply incapable intelligence or mental health-wise.

I don't understand how breastfeeding can not be part of a vegan diet. Or did she try and fail at breastfeeding?

I agree Pruni There has got to be a lot more to the story than whats been reported. Poor wee baby .

Vegan formula milk is available so I can't understand why they didn't use that if bf failed. I read about another case a few years back where a newborn died after being fed just flaxseed oil.

DD is on Soy formula for milk intollerance and she's thriving, so I'm guessing they gave him regular soy milk, which has no nutritional content at all Poor little love.
