Another shooting in us?

It's just popped up on my phone but doesn't seem to be showing up on BBC or sky sites.
Is America likely to actually have an investigation into why so many?

Sorry, I meant mass shooting not killing.

IHaveACuntingPlan · 15/02/2018 03:30

Just read further down the article. It's the 8th shooting in or around school premises this year, and the 6th that has resulted in the injury or death of a student. It's only bloody February!

IHaveACuntingPlan · 15/02/2018 03:32

*18th sorry, not 8th. That's terrible. The fact that they have regular drills to prepare them for events such as this just shows how much of a problem it is.

WaitingForEgg · 15/02/2018 03:38

It’s a friend of mines old high school. How incredibly sad and unnecessary

Shadow666 · 15/02/2018 04:24

They’re reporting 17 dead now. It’s awful. Those poor, poor people.

Apparently the killer was obsessed with weapons and posted a lot about guns etc on social media.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2018 05:27

At least 17 dead :( I really wasn't expecting so many.
Agree I was shocked by the drill as well. Clearly (and I'm not being flippant or sarcastic) hey are of limited use anyway. The pupils and staff here were presumably prepared and primed. And yet 17 dead and many injured.

And again nothing will be done. NRA.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2018 07:44

It will take the death of a child of someone of influence before changes are made. Until then there will be endless thoughts and prayers.

Shadow666 · 15/02/2018 07:52

All those children died at Sandy Hook. They were so little. It was horrific, but nothing changed. John Lennon was shot, JFK was shot, MLK was shot, Reagan was shot. Nothing changed. The only way for change is for a deep-rooted change in thinking, but I can’t see it happening. The pro-gun lobby really refuse to believe that guns are the problem.

Shadow666 · 15/02/2018 07:54

Sorry, I read your post as child or someone of importance. 🤦‍♀️

Unfortunately, the people being dealt with don’t work on logic. None of it makes sense.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2018 08:20

But the public should be demanding that the causes are identified and addressed. Over here there would be an inquiry

From the Guardian:

*John Crescitelli, a family doctor and 15 year-old Sarah Crescitelli’s father, was shaking as he was reunited with his daughter. He feared she had been killed.

“These school shootings have to stop. This is crazy. My son’s football coach died. It’s horrible,” he said. “It’s like Columbine across the street from my house.”

Asked by the Guardian if the tragedy should lead to stricter gun control for people with mental health issues, he replied: “I don’t want to get into a gun debate. I really don’t. What are you going to do? Confiscate everybody’s guns? We have millions and millions of weapons … I’m a gun owner. I don’t want the government taking my gun.”*

And that, in a nutshell, is why nothing will change and American children will continue to die in their classrooms. Sad

The mentality is unfathomable to me.

Fekko · 15/02/2018 08:39

Ok John, so you have a gun. In what way did that stop this tragedy?

QueenLaBeefah · 15/02/2018 08:43

This is never going to change. They would rather have children being shot on a regular basis than give up their guns.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2018 08:44

It must be scary to accept that something as woolly as attitude and culture change is the answer (leading to an acceptance of firearm ban).
If in fact that is the answer - my simplistic view

You're right queen and they're demonstrating that

OP posts:
pepperpot99 · 15/02/2018 09:08

You will never be able to implement a gun 'ban' or even gun restriction in the US. It's a lost cause and everyone knows it.

There are 350 million guns in the US. Perhaps more. The US as we know it was founded on struggle and conflict. Gun possession and use is deeply embedded in their blood and their sense of self. The so called modern liberals of NY and so on aren't really a true representation of most Americans.

The quote from the Doctor encapsulates the American sense of identity. They don't want their kids to be murdered, but on balance they see their freedom and identity through the prism of a gun and they will not give that up, even for their children's lives.

How do you remove 350 million guns? You can't. IMO it's a lost cause.

RIP Sad

Shadow666 · 15/02/2018 09:18

It’s not impossible though. The Australian government bought back and destroyed over a million guns. It’s psychologically impossible. But if the American people wanted a change then it could happen.

pepperpot99 · 15/02/2018 09:21

The Australian model has been suggested and rejected in the US, Shadow.
The truth is that the American people DON'T want a change.

Shadow666 · 15/02/2018 09:30

That’s what I mean. Logistically it’s possible but people don’t want to do it. Maybe one day though.

StealthPolarBear · 15/02/2018 09:33

So the change needs to be to culture and attitudes as well as some practical steps eg addressing gun smuggling particularly at the Mexican border (won't the sodding wall help Hmm) and issues about rural people being vulnerable.
But again we are all just speculating. A proper enquiry and analysis would help to identify the issues and the action to be taken.

OP posts:
Spudlet · 15/02/2018 09:35

Exactly. Things could change, but only if people want them to. But if a father standing outside his children's school straight after another gun massacre doesn't want change, no one will. If Sandy Hook didn't make people want change, nothing will. They'd sooner have Kevlar backpacks and whiteboards than even talk about the most minor changes. That man wasn't even asked if he wanted a ban, just about controls for gun access for people with mental health conditions, and he didn't even want to discuss that!

The USA appears to be a country that feels dead children are a price worth paying to keep their guns.

Graphista · 15/02/2018 10:29

It's honestly insane!

I don't buy the border argument, logistics argument not even the constitutional one.

ALL of these could be addressed IF they WANTED to.

worridmum · 15/02/2018 11:15

sadly a child of someone with influence is most likely in a school that has lots of security (armed obviously) so will never happen.

Aragog · 15/02/2018 12:57

They just don't want a change. It's absurd to most people over here in the UK but over there they seem to just accept it as an okay price to pay for their freedom to carry a gun. Instead their solution is to ask for more guns held within schools - they want security carrying guns instead. Bizarre.

When was the last time a normal gun carrying citizen actually stopped one of these massacres???
