Was your turkey off?

I feel so sorry for anyone who had a turkey that turned out to be off. Apparently many found out on Christmas morning and were unable to get a replacement.

This is so disappointing for those individuals affected but really, what's going on with our food supply. Shouldn't we be apply to trust our supermarkets?

Well...aren't Tesco's turkeys from the UK? Who knows "What's going on" with the food supply but these particular ones were probably killed way before Christmas and then frozen...and thawed too soon.

The word "fresh" is used very broadly...especially in relation to large scale poultry farming.

I did see one guy complaining his turkey was "only bought a few days ago and it was past its sell by on Xmas day!". Which I'm sure is annoying but really, if you don't check in the shop, it's your own stupid fault, as long as it was sold before the sell-by. It is easy done and I've done it, but I just kicked myself for not checking, I didn't blame the shop!

Completely different if it was within date but rotten, though, of course. Or if it tasted of bleach, urgh!

Geeky A lot of people order online for delivery! That doesn't give you the chance to check.

Being past the sell by date does not, of course, mean it is inedible or unsafe. If it was frozen it would still be ok for 6-8 months. If it was stored in the fridge it would be ok for 1-2 days.

It annoys me the amount of perfectly edible food that is thrown away because people think it shouldn't be consumed past the sell by date.
