I've read the articles online but am still non the wiser.

Is Catalonia independent of Spanish rule now? What does this mean for the rest of the country that relied on its wealth?

Please can the mn intellect explain it to me in words I understand. Thanks.

Catalonia has declared independence however, Spanish government has cancelled it and called for elections in Dec.

Whole Spanish Economy is being affected but ... Spanish economy was anyway crap thanks to the national government so the citizens won’t feel much difference as much of their health / education and so was cut ages ago.

Ps. I’m Spanish

Catalonia declared independence because it has backed itself into a corner. Once the Spanish government said the referendum was illegal, it could have taken a pause and said we will try again later. It didn’t.
Neither side has covered itself in glory but I think the Catalan regional government has underestimated what would happen if it acted illegally (as determined by Madrid) and it has stirred up what are already powerful feelings and couldn’t back away.
I lived there for a year. I’m sure others will have more informed comment.

I think both sides have gone for the nuclear option and have no idea what to do now.

We live in interesting times as the Chinese proverb says.

In answer to your specific question, op, no. As in a divorce, until the papers come through you are still married. It is not independent.
