Maybe the supermarkets just need a little guidance.

"I see Madame P that Junior P is being a little demanding, here is an all expenses paid holiday somewhere expensive and luxurious with 24 hour on call nanny service to ease the stress"

"Why thank you, yes, the other supermarket has slightly wider parent and child parking spaces, but yes I will accept your kind offer and we will bear your excellent customer service in mind when deciding where to shop".

Hilllary · 11/04/2007 23:57

Whats parenting got to do with supermarkets, we go there to buy our veg not get blooming parental guidance.

colditz · 12/04/2007 00:01

they need a special toddler checkout

With things on springs to fiddle with, and someone to show off to, who will act suitabley astonished and impressed, while handing out little boxes with cheap, interesting and safe items for them to keep.

nobody without a child would be allowed to use this checkout, and tutters would be made to leave, and queue at the fag kioske.

It's only the checkout I find difficult.

handlemecarefully · 12/04/2007 00:29

If the supermarket opened a new checkout for me so that me and tantrumming toddler could make a quick exit, and I had someone to help with packing (whilst I quietly strangle tantrumming toddler) etc then I would be pleased and grateful...

But if it is pushing leaflets - boy would I struggle to keep my composure!

Ndien Dorries has some stuff to say about this in her blog

(scroll down to Wednesday for it, but the stuff about travellers is wortyh reading too).

UnquietDad · 13/04/2007 21:37

Sorry, that's NADINE Dorries.
I join the clamour of voices asking for an EDIT BUTTON! grr.

My children love the supermarket. Can be nightmares in shoe shops though. Can I get help there?

WigWamBam · 13/04/2007 21:40

Most supermarkets can't manage to get their acts together sufficiently to keep their shelves stocked or help you pack your shopping, let alone get stuck in to help when a toddler is throwing a tantrum.

chocolateface · 13/04/2007 21:45

And when C's are demanding and screaming for sugar laden cereal with plastic toys in the packet, will the staff come over and firmly tell them they can only have weetabix or shreddies?

juicychops · 13/04/2007 21:52

colditz, definately agree with fiddling things at checkouts. my ds is murder when im queuing. If the till next to us is empty he goes through the little door and turns the till and conveyer belt on

its very embarrassing

Has anyone ever seen a child smacked in a supermarket, I haven't.

misdee · 13/04/2007 21:56

hmmm if they just provided a little seat for dd2 to sit on in my sight at the check out it would stop some major major strops.

mytwopenceworth · 13/04/2007 21:59

ooh, kerry. that's the sort of thing that could get you flogged on here!

just you wait.

misdee · 13/04/2007 22:00

colditz, lol at toddler checkout, great idea.

i hate smacking but cannot see how they intend to enforce this plan. perhaps they could start by getting rid of the dreadful music and putting sweets on the top shelf.

Frizbe · 13/04/2007 22:10

Have to say our local sainsburys are already fab in this matter, if your little one needs feeding, they'll send someone along to cuddle whilst you pack, or pack whilst you cuddle, same goes for toddler tantrums or inter child bickering!!! might only be my 'nice' local store tho

custy · 13/04/2007 22:12

jesus are kids not allowed to be angry now?

Now in terms of 'helping out' will they be holding the child still while you whack 'em, or will they be slapping them while you try and pop them back in the trolley?

My answer to the problem - soundproof trolleys with lids, pop the kid in - pop the lid on, load the shopping on top. Obviously you'd leave air holes and space for fruit shoots and sausage rolls to be dispensed.

whomovedmychocolate · 13/04/2007 22:16

Frizbe is right - Sainsburys are pretty good. Whenever my DD is screaming, they open till to get us out of the store pronto. Could be the fact that she's inherited her mum's collaratura soprano tones though

I'm always tempted to poke her if there is a queue now though.

A creche would do it nicely. I spend loads more when I don't have the kids with me.

Or lockable child storage boxes at the entrance perhaps.
