I think it is wrong - but just wondered what other people think?? And if I am being too blinkered in my opinion.

Does anyone else think it is strange how much the government obviously wants us to hear about this?

Or am I being cynical?

I mean, other awful things must have happened that we would be equally interested in but it probably wasn't on the agenda for us to hear about it for whatever reason.

expatinscotland · 09/04/2007 22:53

I don't think it's wrong.

I'm

gess · 09/04/2007 22:54

I do think its strange they're allowed to sell their stories- usually they're not.

Given that they are- agree with twiglett- given ludicrous house prices now this will make a real difference to their lives- if people want to read about it that much, let them be paid. I think it raises all sorts of questions about ridiculous payments for stories, but if that's the going rate......

expatinscotland · 09/04/2007 22:56

Exactly, gess!

I mean, people have sold their stories about shagging, doing drugs, running off with their daughters' partners, etc.

What's the difference?

I'm .

selling stories has now been banned for services personnel

Aloha · 09/04/2007 22:59

If they had something critical to say about the conduct of the army, you bet they would not be allowed - let alone encouraged - to be paid for their views while still in the services. Pure propaganda. I think its wrong.

electra · 09/04/2007 23:02

Aloha has said what I was thinking.

DH asked me what I thought of this yesterday, this is what I said 'if her contract says that she shouldn't talk to the press without permission, then if she does, expect to be sacked' and as a former union rep, I wouldn't rep her. However, he said that they have been given special dispensation to do it, so good for her. If people want to read about it, then let them. I haven't btw.

donnie · 10/04/2007 13:54

they will have been told exactly what they can and cannot say - after all they have signed the official secrets act, so the idea that the public will be getting ' the truth' is risible.

They are stupid if they think they will not compromise themselves by selling their stories. The only reason the MOD has sanctioned this is because the UK came out of the debacle looking like twats and Iran came off pretty well considering they are regarded as so dangerous by so many.

As for likening a story like theirs to a ' celeb' story about rehab or gossip etc and asking what the difference is ? err, well perhaps a matter of national and international security?

This will backfire horribly.

Eleusis · 10/04/2007 14:59

I think Iran looks like the twat, personally. I don't see the UK has done anything worng. They didn't give in to rediculous demands. They released proof of the coordinates. Iran looks silly to the outside world.

nogoes · 10/04/2007 15:09

I agree with Donnie. Normally armed forces personnel are banned from selling their stories and I don't see why this situation should be any different.

Eleusis · 10/04/2007 15:24

I don't really mind if they are personally banned from telling and prfitting from the stories. But, if they are, then the NAvy/Marines ought to come out an tell the world the real story because Iran is bloody lying.

donnie · 10/04/2007 17:10

well of course Iran is lying - but do you honestly think Britain is fessing up full and proper? get real. There are always three sides in military / political situations such as this one: ours, theirs, and the truth.Anyone who fully believes either Iran or the Uk on this one is deluded IMO.

paulaplumpbottom · 10/04/2007 17:17

I don't think thats always true

JARM · 10/04/2007 17:21

im with aloha.

Dh is a serving soldier, could sell some really good stories about the state of our so-called Armed Forces, but is he allowed? NO.

noddyholder · 10/04/2007 17:22

Did you see that Trevor McDonut interview All Laura Ashley puff sleeves and soft focus a la diana

NadineBaggott · 10/04/2007 17:33

discussed on Jeremy Vine today. Ex soldier came on on said you would have been court-martialled not so long ago, wasn't impressed at all.

General consensus seemed to be that the RN/Marines have let themselves down.

Right on as normal littlelapin. Most of the people condemning them have no idea what it's like to be in the forces and probably never will.

NadineBaggott · 10/04/2007 17:53

only two were given permission though not all 15

NadineBaggott · 10/04/2007 18:03
