I've just heard that uber's licence isn't going to be renewed in London and my Twitter feed has lots of posts from angry people. This doesn't affect me, as I don't live in London, but I wouldn't use them anyway, as I think traditional taxis are better regulated and work better for their drivers. Am I being hopelessly naive?

Black cabs are extremely expensive and ubers are extremely cheap! Yes cab drivers are extremely knowledgable about London but we're in the sat nav age now and it's really not that much of a plus that you can remember all the roads off by heart anymore unfortunately. They say uber is unsafe but their drivers are held to the same standard that mini cab drivers are and yet I don't see any calls to ban them. I feel as if TFL buckled to the pressure of the black cab drivers, I hope uber win their appeal but I doubt they will.

Hello, there's another thread on this, but wanted to make the point that Uber did not see their licence renewed as they were viewed "not fit and proper" for their many grieveous failings. That hardly constitutes TFL or anybody else "buckling under pressure from black cab drivers" does it?

And if you think the knowledge is as simple as merely learning the roads off by heart you are quite mistaken, there's incredible detail of great value to many black cab users (disabled, blind and infirm most importantly) that no satnav will ever replicate.

I couldn't find another thread - can you tell me which board it's on?

This is the government basically blocking capitalism, the black cabs are too lazy to adapt

Thanks

I'm with you OP. TWO existing industries were undercut at a stroke by uber. I refuse to use it. Nothing safer than a black cab at night.

It is the government regulating capitalism, and having penalties in place when rules are broken.
