Government of Iceland collapses after PM implicated in pardon of paedophile who raped his adopted daughter from the age of 5

"Hjalti Sigurjón Hauksson, had raped and abused his adopted daughter for 12 years, from the age of 5 until the girl finally managed to escape and press charges. He was sentenced in 2004 to five and a half years in prison, which is one of the longest sentences ever handed down in sex abuse cases in Iceland.
This summer the man was then granted a full pardon, despite the fact that there is no indication he has ever repented. His victim has revealed in interviews that the man has continued to harass her and her family, among other things by approaching her six year old daughter while she was on a field trip with her school. The man was working as a school bus driver at the time"

The scandal has nothing to do with the PM of Iceland though - his father wrote a letter asking for certain civil rights to be returned to Hauksson.

Apparently in Iceland convicts can have certain civil rights restored - enabling them to run for public office, qualify for certain government jobs or serve as an attorney or solicitor, for example - if three letters of recommendation from persons of good character are provided.

Is someone in office to blame if his father does something stupid?

The problem is though that the interior minister lied and covered up to prevent it becoming public knowledge the President's father had done that. So it's not so much the letter itself as the cover up that ensued.

I think it's disgusting he was only sentenced to five and a half years.

And I thought the lax sentencing here in Ireland was bad.
