Seen this on the BBC too.
Looks like a nasty accident involving two lorries and a mini bus.

Happened in the early hours.

Hulababy · 26/08/2017 13:51

8 confirmed dead and 4 injured :(
Two arrested.

Very sad.

RubyJack · 26/08/2017 17:41

Awful :(

Not really what I'd call an accident when someone has decided to drive a huge lorry on a motorway after downing pints Hmm

Androidsdreamofelectricsheep · 26/08/2017 18:36

It appears some of them were visiting from IndiaSad You often see minibuses of Asian people on that stretch going to weddings or celebrations. Sad

MadisonAvenue · 26/08/2017 18:39

It's horrific, so sad.

I don't drive but, as a passenger, lorries on the motorway scare me.

RubyJack · 26/08/2017 18:49

That information wasn't available when I posted this morning lotuscake.

Have to admit I hate passing large lorries on the motorway.

6 men and 2 women killed. 4 injured inc a young child.

Cheby · 27/08/2017 09:53

Both drivers have been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, and one driver with an additional count of causing death by careless fmdriving while under the influence of alcohol.

It's awful; I might be naive but I'm genuinely shocked that a lorry driver would have a skilful before driving.

I can't comprehend what has happened for both of them to have been charged.

honeysucklejasmine · 27/08/2017 10:00

The pictures of the damage to the vehicles are horrific. It doesn't bear thinking about what those people went through. Sad

ineedamoreadultieradult · 27/08/2017 10:06

Absolutely not defending anyone who drink drives but I think it's dangers to assume being charged with drink driving means he had a skinful (unless I've missed where the amount he drunk has been reported). Being over the limit can be as much as one drink it all depends on timings and your body mass etc. There is no date amount of alcohol to drink before driving.

ineedamoreadultieradult · 27/08/2017 10:06

Safe

maxthemartian · 27/08/2017 10:10

I hope that, if warranted, they get the maximum sentence possible, as derisory as that is.
Those poor people on their dream holiday.

Cheby · 27/08/2017 18:09

Fair point ineed, I guess I'm just shocked that a lorry driver would have anything at all to drink before driving for work.

Androidsdreamofelectricsheep · 27/08/2017 19:24

maxmartian how do you know they were on their dream holiday? Haven't seen anything about where they were going, only that some of them were believed to have come over from India

ineedamoreadultieradult · 27/08/2017 19:40

They were being driven to Eurostar to go to DisneyLand according to a relative.

Androidsdreamofelectricsheep · 27/08/2017 19:59

Really? 😢
I assumed it was a trip to a wedding or something.

I passed the scene post clean up. Probably first allowed onto the motorway.

How anyone survived that accident is beyond me. I wish them well in their recovery and RIP to those who died.

I spent a summer working for National Express. Their drivers have to blow in to a Breathalyzer every time they start the engine. If they don't pass the engine doesn't start.

They also random breath test the office staff.

maximus55 · 03/09/2017 10:57

Similar to TFL bus drivers. When I worked for them, random breath testing at all TFL garages. Who gets tested is computer generated. A computer randomly selects numbers. Bit like the lottery. So if a number 1 is generated, whoever is on duty 1 gets tested. So can be any time of the day from first sign-on (04 00) to last sign-on (17 00). And the same driver can be tested more that once in a week, depending on shift number and computer generated number.
