What is child poverty?

On C4 just now.

When i was a lone parent on benefits, would I have been classed as in poverty? Certainly didn't feel like it.

I got the majority of my rent and council tax paid for me and was left with around £120 per week in my hand to pay food, electric etc.

I managed absolutely fine on this amount and me and DS certainly never went without any essentials.

So what is classed as being in poverty?

It would depend.

Relative (eg as compared to the others in your society) is common in the UK- that can be as genberal as less holidays at the extreme

Absolute- where all the basics for life are at a minimum

Youc an be poor and earn quite a bit, I suspect as the housing amrket continues up society willr eliase more and mroe that this si true- when we earmned 30K between us we were worse off than now (dh works, I'm a student) due to loans / other financial commitments that really added up.

£120 isn't terrible badly off, but I suspect in an emergency you'd struggle- if say the cooker blew up.
