Charlie Gard 15

This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Lastly, here are some hopefully useful reference points of facts surrounding the case.

Threats to the medics and judge now on FB

I thought they had turned off comments on CA? Please tell me not on the GOSH page..

rosiejosie · 24/07/2017 15:24

Not in a head girl kind of way, but I really think thread should be closed soon.

What good is it doing anymore now? There is no more medical or legal or ethical information to impart.

May the child rest in peace.

user1498911589 · 24/07/2017 15:25

but I really think thread should be closed soon.

So do I.

Gierg · 24/07/2017 15:25

GOSH have published their position statement

WeDoNotSow · 24/07/2017 15:25

TBH I blame Dr Hirano.
He should have never offered to treat when he hadn't even seen Charlie

Butteredparsnip1ps · 24/07/2017 15:25

PyongyangKipperban sadly, I would say your FIL is not untypical of people who blame someone or something for the death of a loved one. the tragedy IME, is that the as they seek blame, and become angry and irrational, their grieving becomes more complicated and leads to serious damage to their physical and mental health. Often for many decades.

samesorrystory · 24/07/2017 15:26

Rosie people have been very upset by this, it is good to have somewhere to talk or be comforted. Not quite sure why the thread should be closed?

cjt110 · 24/07/2017 15:26

I am going to request this thread is closed now.

They is a risk of a diplomatic incident if important members of the USA government chirp up. If that happens we should discuss it here.

friendlysnakehere · 24/07/2017 15:26

No, not on the live feed outside the courthouse, still being broadcast and taking comments summerbreezer

muckypup73 · 24/07/2017 15:26

rosiejosie, I have reported the thread to be closed guys, because it serves no purpose now. There are no winners this family have to greive now.

MommaGee · 24/07/2017 15:27

There are people on twitter condemning them for 'giving up' and giving 'consent to kill'
Sadly inevitable

ShatnersWig · 24/07/2017 15:27

Buttered Agreed. But they don't do it in such a public way, or allow family members to whip up a social media storm that results in threats and defamation of a world-class hospital, its staff, or their legal representatives.

SocksBoatsAndQats · 24/07/2017 15:27

Thank you to all who've provided insight and sensible discussion over the issues this case has brought into focus. I hope those around CG have peace.

friendlysnakehere · 24/07/2017 15:27

I would like the thread to continue if others do?

cjt110 · 24/07/2017 15:27

muckypup73 I've just reported it too.

OP posts:
11122aa · 24/07/2017 15:28

Ill set up a thread on a special foroum for us who do not want it completley shut.

samesorrystory · 24/07/2017 15:28

Why can't it continue?

ShatnersWig · 24/07/2017 15:28

There are potentially serious legal implications (such as the calls from increased parental power) that may follow from today, together with potential fall out for GOSH. I think the thread should remain.

GavelRavel · 24/07/2017 15:28

Desperately sad news. Too much time was lost. He should have been able to have treatment in the US many months ago.

Come back and comment once you've taken and passed GCSE Biology, A Level Biology and studied Medicine or Molecular Genetics at university for 4+ years you stupid, stupid, stupid man.

Umpteenthnamechange · 24/07/2017 15:28

The Charlie's army USA page is still going though. Hmm

cjt110 · 24/07/2017 15:28

It appears from what I have read there are picking sniping at one another now over things rather than conducting themselves in the manner they did before. It just doesn't seem tasteful.

OP posts:
muckypup73 · 24/07/2017 15:28

I just think the parents need to greive, and its unfair to carry it on, now the decision has been made.

samesorrystory · 24/07/2017 15:29

It has been so measured, this whole set of threads, there will doubtless be others far less measured that will spring up over the coming days.

NellieBuff · 24/07/2017 15:29

I do not want to get into a bun fight - I have been in C&C position as has many other mothers on this thread. Connie is speaking from a place of such pain that I hope you never have to suffer it.

I do not agree with her words but attacking her now is in my opinion cruel. Emotions are high so maybe it time to let the dust settle and only once it has settled can we discuss such matters in a calm and rational manner.

To those I have travelled with on this many threads I send Flowers. Everyone involved in this case I will say a prayer for,
