This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Yes, the justs are a shorthand way of saying "I'm going to ignore the hideous complexity involved and expect someone else to solve that".

I saw a comment somewhere by a man who said ''will Charlie still be a baby when he is six?' 'He was talking about the older, 'cuter' images used so often by the press.
I didn't realise until today that 'featureworld' were instrumental in 'selling' the story to the Daily Heil.
It has been an exercise in marketing..cute baby pics, mum posed to look long suffering and saintly, pics carefully posed to wring out the sympathy vote.

A comment on the Independent said some people's babies are born terribly disfigured, and there, the public sympathy is way less, yet the suffering from the parents is identical.

That really is a bizarre thunderclap. Just trying to suggest that an entire legal system should just turn into an episode of X factor.

To be fair I've just looked at Lauras profile and she looks pretty young, I'ld imagined her as more of an older woman than she looks

So where are the older family members? and why aren't THEY telling the youngsters to get off their phones and engage in the process? We know that they do have older relatives as they said that Connies mum was at the bedside a lot

I think the Thunderclap post was in response to the quote from Lady Hale from the Supreme Court which is also on there next to a photo of Connie with a much younger Charlie.

"Any court is bound to feel utmost sympathy for devoted parents who are desperate to explore every possible way of preserving the life of their...much loved baby son.

As parents we would all want to do the same...however as judges... we are only concerned with the legal position"

Umpteenthnamechange, I think it is possibley because the American doctor has sided with Gosh because charlieis that bad. and they have been told.

The grandparents have remained quiet throughout i notice... I think LG is letting this all get to her head. She's like the messiah to CA

I think you are correct in your hypothesis.
Hale has lived a bit..she came from a normal background, not privileged.

If you watch the video of the supreme court Judgement, she obviously has feelings, her position wasn't enviable.
The court video had to silence the things CY was shouting [maybe there was swearing] but you can hear the wails of ''theyr'e lying!!''

I just know that if I was acting like Connie my MIL would literally move in, take my phone and tell me firmly but kindly that nobody on the Sun's facebook page mattered, all that mattered was the family and the child. Then she'ld make me wash/sleep/eat and send me back to the hospital sans phone while she cleaned my house and got some groceries in

I'm sad that nobody is doing that for C&C, and I guess Laura too.

I think there's quite a bit of hypothesising here about what exactly the meaning of the words of the thunderclap are.
