This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Lastly, here are some hopefully useful reference points of facts surrounding the case.

Bubblesbuddy, I don't know the legal machinations of the UK, but I wonder if they could / would launch civil claims against GOSH for not 'allowing' them take him for treatment, denying him the opportunity etc.

I hope not.

Maryz

This one ?

TinselTwins · 20/07/2017 18:40

That can happen here too for some sorts of fines Maryz.

BubblesBuddy · 20/07/2017 18:41

Non payment of certain fines here can lead to imprisonment.

Sostenueto · 20/07/2017 18:41

Am back! My gdd has to have lactolose every day and is under constipation clinic. She has a really healthy diet but she will not drink! Even at the age of 15 we have to practically force her to drink.

TinselTwins · 20/07/2017 18:41

Just to say well guys about the eye thing, blind children can open their eyes & most dead people until their eyes get closed for them!

Sostenueto · 20/07/2017 18:43

Eew! Just read fibrogel post! Every time I drink it I will visualise what mucky said!

TinselTwins · 20/07/2017 18:44

Now they're saying GOSH are putting too much tape around his vent just to deliberately make him uncomfortable!

The child has had seizures and is not sedated! THAT'S why it's taped more than a kid under anaesthetic would be!

NellieBuff · 20/07/2017 18:44

[Blush I am so glad I gave folks a titter earlier on.

NellieBuff · 20/07/2017 18:46

Sorry pressed too soon and meant to include a Smile

Not my day really Smile

Sostenueto · 20/07/2017 18:47

Meant oakyleaf lol!

grannytomine · 20/07/2017 18:47

You don't need to "pull" eyelids open especially on someone who isn't consciously controlling them But I was commenting on a post that was accusing "someone" of pulling his eyelids open. I didn't make up the "pull" comment I was quoting it.

One of my children has had years of treatment for an eye condition and surgery twice in a British children's hospital, not GOSH. I know something about eye conditions in children and I know you can open a baby's eyes without pulling them, I also know that sometimes nurses do pull their eyelids open e.g. when they need eye drops after surgery. That wasn't the point though was it. The point was it was a nasty thing to say.

Sostenueto · 20/07/2017 18:49

Had brain scan, the bloody noise is horrific! Hate scanners!

I think the point about the eyes is that it's quite presumptuous and disrespectful to speculate that his eyes have been deliberately opened for a photo opportunity.

Lifting his eyelids gently for medical treatment, or to encourage visual stimulation is very different.

TinselTwins · 20/07/2017 18:53

I didn't say it though grannietomine , I disagreed with that post so your splitting heirs with the wrong poster on this

Am I being cynical in thinking it would be possible for 'someone' to just pull the babies eyelids open for the short time it takes for a picture?

TinselTwins this is the post I was referring to, in case you thought I was making it up.

TinselTwins I never said you did say it but you replied to my post pointing out it was a nasty thing to say. Do you think it was OK?

nauticant · 20/07/2017 18:54

Following mentions here, I've just read about the Jahi McMath case. That is a gruesome business. It is certainly persuasive that declarations of death should only be the domain of established medical experts.

grannytomine · 20/07/2017 18:55

I never split heirs by the way.

TinselTwins · 20/07/2017 18:55

I know you can be jailed here for non-payment of fines, but doesn't the jail time cancel the fine? yes that's right it does, some people "chose" the jail route here to clear the fine without leaving the family without

I didn't realise the jail time in US didn't do the same Sad

grannytomine · 20/07/2017 18:56

DarthMaiden, glad someone can see the point. It was a disrespectful remark and totally unnecessary.
