Issues raised by the CG case 11

Venusflytwat · 17/07/2017 18:30

This is a thread following the legal and ethical questions raised by the recent court case involving Charlie Gard.

Please could we refrain from insulting or otherwise "bashing" his parents. It isn't in the spirit of Mumsnet and will get the threads removed.

Please could we also remember that at the heart of this case is a terminally ill baby and his heartbroken parents. There are those participating in and watching this thread for whom these issues are painful. Please let's try and be mindful of them when we post. This isn't a place for name calling or trivialising the very real pain they feel. Many parents of severely disabled children are on here.

Lastly, here are some hopefully useful reference points of facts surrounding the case.

Bloomin nora that was quick work on mumsnets behalf!!!

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings · 17/07/2017 23:23

Spy on your cheating husband, all proceeds to CA!

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 23:23

Bit suspect that post me thinks.

MontyPythonsFlyingFuck · 17/07/2017 23:24

Someone posted on a previous thread that their husband's FOUR DAY STAY in an American ITU cost $225,000. So that £1.3m wouldn't necessarily go an awful long way in the US. Yes, the treatment might be free but the care won't, and that's the more expensive part.

muckypup73 · 17/07/2017 23:24

BeyondDrinksAndKnowsThings, lol

Sostenueto, just a bit????? lmao

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 23:24

muckypup73 · 17/07/2017 23:25

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 23:26

Being of low technical knowledge how would they do that?

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 23:28

Yes someone even put a bill on for a birth, it was thousands montypython!

redshoeblueshoe · 17/07/2017 23:29

I didn't see the message that is now hidden, but there was an odd spam bot on another thread today and it was deleted very quickly

muckypup73 · 17/07/2017 23:30

I am not sure they can raise an indefinate pot of money, if it costs $225,000 for 4 days and they get the go ahead to go, charlies will be in there a longtime, so I guess that explains why they are still fund raising, but what if they give him the treatment here? or charlies passes away?

TinselTwins · 17/07/2017 23:31

Bit suspect that post me thinks it's nothing to do with CA it's just spam, it was on another (un-related) thread on my watch list too

muckypup73 · 17/07/2017 23:32

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 23:34

TinselTwins · 17/07/2017 23:35

redshoeblueshoe · 17/07/2017 23:36

I remember a spate of them a while ago.

Sostenueto · 17/07/2017 23:37

Right I'm off to bed goodnight to all. Prayers to Charlie and his family. May all be resolved in a quiet respectful and dignified way xxxx

I posted this in thread 10 as I didn't realise this one had been started.

I hope it's of some use to anyone interested in knowing more about the science behind Charlie's case...

My OH pointed out some very useful and explanatory posts on piston heads (of all places) by someone who has deep knowledge of the condition affecting Charlie, as well as what's being proposed as 'treatment' and why it sadly can't work.

I've been reading the posts and they are extremely good at explaining the very complex issues, including what's incorrect in a lot of the media.

The poster has also said that they'd be happy for people to take their material to use elsewhere, if it's useful.

The person is called 'Wiccan of Darkness' and the posts are in here if they are of any interest.

(I would try to copy and paste some of the explanations myself but not convinced I won't screw it up.)

TinselTwins · 17/07/2017 23:46

another gem:

"The only reason he can't cry is the tube, he can still make tears which is half of crying"

it's really really REALLY not! producing body fluids is not half of being able to cry!

oakleaffy · 17/07/2017 23:48

The news tonight..one man with MND desiring a kindly death with the help of his doctor, and the other, a desperately sick child whose parents cannot let him go.
The Gard case, in the beginning, I think a lot of public had enormous sympathy, which was how the ''Save Charlie'' fund grew so fast.

But then there was a sea change in public sympathy, and it mainly came [I feel] from the sheer bone headed ghastly allegations made up about GOSH by the family and their 'supporters'.

Also, many of us have known, or have experienced people who have had gravely ill children who have accepted and trusted specialists enough to let their beloved child [of any age] go.

This nightmarish scenario just seems to get worse and worse.
I wish, for Charlie's sake that he could just have died peacefully with his mum and dad at his side, without prolonging the agony for all of them.
Tinseltwins made some very pertinent observations about an unconscious baby looking like a sleeping one, and the nappy/dribbling comment yes, one expects that of babies, but not in adults.
This case has made several friends/family talk about 'end of life' scenarios with each other, and to a man, boy and woman, they say ''please let me go with dignity, the brain IS the person''.
