News item on the BBC states that genital plastic surgery 'sought by girls as young as nine'

Shocking. I can't even remember being particularly aware of my labia at that age. More shocking is that some of the procedures are being carried out. I don't know what to think of it.

I think (and I may be interpreting it wrong) it states 'emotional distress' as a clinical reason for referral. Maybe there isn't enough information in the article and surgery is a last resort, but surely there are other ways of dealing with this distress? Especially given the information about how young girls aren't fully developed and time is needed to allow their bodies to mature?

And I STILL can't see any other threads on this, which topics are they in?
