They were outside but now the crowds have all entered the civic centre town hall

I am not surprised that this is happening

There were 3 families sleeping in westway on weds night. 3 families. Supported by housing officers waiting to find victims accommodation. Hardly anyone turned up..why?? Because majority are dead and no one is cming forward to confirm.

cathf · 16/06/2017 18:27

Not fact Piggy, as far as I know.
Yes the cladding was put up and it changed the appearance of the tower. I read its main function was to improve the insulation and heating efficiency of the residents. I don't know if this is correct, but neither do you.
If you accept hysterical hearsay as fact, you kind of prove my point.

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2017 18:27

May well be the case draylon - I was responding to cath suggesting that the idea that the flats' appearance was being tarted up was a silly rumour/conspiracy theory.

Put some cladding on, make everything look a bit nicer, put boilers in dodgy places and pipes in stairwells, leave a load of rubbish lying around : hey presto : superficially better looking building + fire hazard = horrific fire.

tobeornottobe1 · 16/06/2017 18:28

How long til bed time,

Thats exactly it, these people have watched people burn; some being their family members! They arent just a rent amob as someone said earlier!!

sparechange · 16/06/2017 18:28

but WHY can't the Council confirm the normal occupancy of the block?

What on earth would that achieve?
Other than for ghouls on social media to be able to speculate on the number of potential victims?

tobeornottobe1 · 16/06/2017 18:29

The council dont want to confirm anything as they fear of riots, well thats just whats happening now because of their down play and silence.

IfYouGoDownToTheWoodsToday · 16/06/2017 18:29

This is what happens when you just ignore peoples' needs and tell them austerity means tough choices, while your friends get richer.

This 100%^^^

Its been happening for years, has got worse since austerity and ordinary people in London have had enough. I have being saying since Wednesday that I wouldn't be surprised if there was civil unrest. The poor do not have a voice and it has taken this horrific, preventable fire. for the media and politicians to listen. But only because it will look bad if they don't. Angry

Sycamorewindmills · 16/06/2017 18:30

Nobody can confirm the normal occupancy number of the block. Only the amount of people on the original application form when the property was originally left to the tenants.

Piggywaspushed · 16/06/2017 18:31

cath, I do know because there are various copies of letters online, in the media and the new MP opposed all this on that exact same council. It is certainly the case that a selling point of all this cladding is an improved appearance. There are some flats in Luton due to have this cladding and the only info residents have had, the only input offered is to choose a colour.

It is also a fact that residents complained and complained and complained and were bullied, threatened and called 'vexatious'.

You are determined to see all this as left wing hearsay no doubt.

Saucery · 16/06/2017 18:31

Did I seriously just read someone comparing cars to housing?

Fuck me.

Dragongirl10 · 16/06/2017 18:32

It seems inconceivable that millions was recently spent on refurbishment, but none of it on updating fire safety on a 50 year old building.....
l would like to know who from the local council oversaw and signed off on this refurb.......

The council had the millions for the cladding which was for insulation purposes, but chose not to spend any of it on fire safety, there should have been effective fire alarms, sprinklers, fireproof exit staircases. It costs 300-400 hundred thousand, for a sprinkler system in a building of that size according to a fire expert. millions was spent on the upgrade.......utterly inexcusable.

can anybody with knowledge tell me why people were told to stay in the building? there seems both at the tragic event and following nobody or no group of leaders.

CremeFresh · 16/06/2017 18:33

tobe I mentioned rent a mob . I'm not saying these poor victims don't have the right to protest. I was saying that I fear that , I don't know what the official title is, a small minority of people will turn up just to cause trouble. As in football hooligans that start fights.

For context:
I live in a HA house.
It has taken them 9 fucking months to fix my NDN broken bedroom window.
9 months ffs.

She was freezing over wnter.

We all complained.
Nothing was fucking done because "money"....

Saucery · 16/06/2017 18:35

There's a basic standard of safety for all cars, Draylon.
Your analogy is a bit

Not for homes though, it would seem.

Welldoneme · 16/06/2017 18:35

What has astonished me over this sorry incident is that these high rise flats do not have a basic sprinkler system.

Even my local Asda has one.

I would be angry too.

Saucery · 16/06/2017 18:36

Ha, I'll format that one again.

Your analogy seems a bit.......silly?

Dragon - because according a council leader some of the residents didn't want the sprinklers. He went into say adding sprinklers would have delayed the works that were going on inside the building.

The sprinklers would have cost 200k.

But since when do tenants have a say in fire prevention?

Saucery · 16/06/2017 18:39

And Draylon, I can choose to weigh up the safety of having a car v public transport or just walking.

I could choose when I bought my house, looking at fire exits etc and materials used.

These people had no choice. And many of them died because of someone else's choice.
