one cute Vietnamese boy - aged 3, she has changed his name, he speaks no English but she was able to just take him away anyway, allegedly...

If she wants a Welsh one to add to her collection, she can have DD at weekends

colditz · 15/03/2007 21:50

Oh, his little face

But, he has been in an orphanage for 3 years - I think if someone there was going to adopt him, they would have done. but I wish she hadn't changed his own name.

dinny · 15/03/2007 21:51

wow, strange Brad couldn't be there though.

it says on the comments on that site that she is a heroin addict??? nevere heard those rumours before....??

colditz · 15/03/2007 21:51

I could never never visit an orphanage, I would fill my house with more children than I could afford to feed.

Marina · 15/03/2007 21:51

I try to keep an open mind about celebrity adoptions but this really does smack of popping to the shops doesn't it.
A three year old child has had his name changed and is whisked off by a woman he's only met once before? It sounds more like abduction than adoption and shame on the Vietnamese authorities for endorsing Jolie's view of herself as above the law

Marina · 15/03/2007 21:52

She can adopt as a single woman but they don't accept unmarried couples apparently dinny
So Brad was presumably left hanging in the wardrobe

dinny · 15/03/2007 21:57

ah, I see, Marina

deaconblue · 16/03/2007 08:29

It's all very noble and everything but WHY does she only pick the stunningly beautiful children? Also WTF would you change a 3 year old's name? that seems downright cruel to me and weirdly unnecessary

VioletBaudelaire · 16/03/2007 08:31

I hope they'll all have a very happy life together.

paulaplumpbottom · 16/03/2007 08:35

I agree ShoppingBags its bizarre. The poor child has just been whisked away from everything he has ever known and he can't even keep his own name, maybe the only thing his parents ever gave him. I think thats very sad.

Nbg · 16/03/2007 08:35

This is lovely and everything but it totally pisses me off that these slebs seem to get preferencial treatment when adopting.

suejonez · 16/03/2007 08:36

much more comman for american adopters to change the children names regardless of how old they are. I've known US adopters change the names or 6/7 yr olds

He does speak some English but rarely would any child speak any english - it should not make them unadoptable. There are strategies to help them cope with the language change.

Colditz - the hardest thing about adopting from an institution is leaving all the others behind. Its heartbreaking.

Shoppingbags - there are very few ugly children under 5. Trust me I adopted from an instituion for kids under 4 and it was rare that they weren't georgeous in some way.

Interestingly she wouldn;t have been able to adopt him from teh UK becasue a) Vietnam is closed to adoptions from UK and b) you cannot adopt out of birth order here ie she has a younger child so should have adopted with at least a two year gap and younger.

suejonez · 16/03/2007 08:37

I doubt very much his parents named him.

JanH · 16/03/2007 10:15

My main problem with it is that he doesn't know them, sue - they zoomed in, picked him up and zoomed out - no time to get to know him. The name change and language business wouldn't matter nearly so much if they had done it the way you did (although maybe not for quite such a long time )

Yes I've heard that about American adopters. It seems to me to encoourage a lack of respect for the previous life experiences of the children - I mean your name is pretty damn basic.

I've also heard of a little fad of re-birthing for adopted children as well. It went out of fashion when some nutter killed her adopted child by suffocating her during some wierd rebirthing ceremony.

Nutters.

BettySpaghetti · 16/03/2007 10:24

Its so sad that that little boy can't keep his name -the only familiar thing in his life now hes been whisked away is his name that hes had for the last 3 years, and now even thats gone .

Marina · 16/03/2007 10:28

Exactly Janh. I think adoption is a wonderful opportunity for looked-after children but this particular case just seemed too fast and furious

expatinscotland · 16/03/2007 10:28

Did you see the YouTube spoof of her, 'Womb Raiders'?

LOL!

Angelina travels most often on her French passport. Her mum was French.

ComeOVeneer · 16/03/2007 10:35

How does she manage to adopt so quickly? She has adopted 3 children in the last few years. I have friends who have been in the process of adoption for the past 3 years and the end isn't yet in sight. Seems odd to me.

suejonez · 16/03/2007 11:25

JanH - thats the way it works in most adoptions overseas eg China - pick up and leave. Kazakhstan is the exception.

Cov - american adoptions are MUCH quicker than ours in teh UK. Was not uncomman seeing people adopt within 6-9 months of starting - which lets face it is no different to pregnancy.

I suspect that she did get preferential treatment but not as preferencial as you might think if you compare her to the US system rather than the grindlingly slow UK system.

Marina · 16/03/2007 11:28

I did not realise any of that Sue, thanks for explaining.

MrsMills · 16/03/2007 11:30

Angelina 3 - Madonna 1

JanH · 16/03/2007 11:32

No, I didn't either, sue (obviously!)

Seems wrong though

Was it Angelina who said she didn't really have much time/love/empathy/whatever for her own baby because he/she hadn't really suffered like her adopted babies?

Hulababy · 16/03/2007 11:35

Good luck to them all. Poor little thing - 3 years in an orphanage; hope his new life is full of love and happiness.
