Met Office Warning Of Heavy Snow Thursday March 15, 04:07 PM

The Met Office has issued a warning that heavy snow falls are on the way for parts of the UK, starting on Sunday and persisting until the middle of next week. The blizzards will be driven across the country by cold northerly winds and disruption to roads, rail and air travel is likely.

The first significant snowfalls are expected overnight on Sunday and during Monday.

Bugger put up the Gazebo, and all the summer toys and furniture, bugger bugger bugger!

fannyannie · 15/03/2007 18:01

oh blimey - doesn't suprise me too much - my mum was snowed into hospital when she had me in the middle of March at the end of the 1970's

Blu · 15/03/2007 18:03

Hooray!

I missed the last lot of snow as I was in Sunny South Africa!

I hope there will be enough for sledging!

Aloha · 15/03/2007 18:04

I've just painted the wendy house, bought lots of t-shirts and a floral shirt, have ditched my tights, got out my sunglasses and generally felt all happy and springy.

Blu · 15/03/2007 18:06

Sorry!
You can borrow our sledge, if it will cheer you up?

LilRedWG · 15/03/2007 18:06

You do realise that heavy snow is only snow fall over 2" don't you? We are the laughing stock of countries such as Sweden, Canada and the US because of our media's panic at a snowflake!

All that being said - bring it on - I love the snow!!!!!

Aloveheart · 15/03/2007 18:06

what a shame thought that the warmer weather is on it's way.

OH great have to get spikes on my shoes live at the bottom of a steep hill!!

Wonder if schools will shut??

what parts of the uk are gonna be hit???

LilRedWG · 15/03/2007 18:07

And to all you early gardeners, my Dad always says that snow is, "the poor man's compost". Apparently, it doesn't do as much harm as frost and help little plants and seed to grow.

alittlebitshy · 15/03/2007 18:08

oh shit dh has planted seeds for his veggies.

how can we keep them warm without dh sitting out there with a hairdryer?

LilRedWG · 15/03/2007 18:09

Snow is a natural insulator - it protects from frosts etc.

Apparently....

aloha get your thermals back on, pronto

marina, i love the way you throw horticultural varieties into conversation we have a lovely one at dd2's nursery, which was a gift from the local authority to celebrate our 10th anniv (but not sure of variety )

VeniVidiVickiQV · 15/03/2007 18:11

A poly/fleece tunnel/cloches and a propagator tent. Coldframe at the very least.

I am gutted - I wanted to get cracking on the garden this weekend - which I still can, but it really limits what seeds I can actually sow. I only have one polytunnel and it aint even made yet.

As much as I love snow......

It snowed the day DD was born, a few years ago - which was 10th April.

Marina · 15/03/2007 18:13

I am a gardening dunce but an appreciator of trees and flowering shrubs bundle
Everything below waist-height in our garden at present can only be improved by a blanket of snow (including dd)

VeniVidiVickiQV · 15/03/2007 18:13

My Plum tree has just started blossoming - for the first time.....

I was in a blardy garden centre this morning looking at bloody bubble wrap and thinking, "thats quite cheap", but I dont need any now

OrmIrian · 15/03/2007 18:14

And my bourgainvillea had survived the winter un-fleeced but not sure it will like snow....

Aloha · 15/03/2007 18:14

Blu, you saw me in my sleeveless top last Sunday - I looked happy, didn't I?

You'd better pick up your raincoat - and there was I thinking 'ah well, she probably won't be any hurry for it now'...

Marina · 15/03/2007 18:17

At this time of year this has got to be one of those gone in 24 hours snowfalls though...I agree with the poor man's compost remark further down the thread - and have my fingers crossed

foxinsocks · 15/03/2007 18:18

poor fruit trees and magnolias (I LOVE seeing the magnolias when I'm out walking)

had just planted an olive tree and a blueberry bush (in pots) - I better bring them inside for a few days (dh will be pleased )

paulaplumpbottom · 15/03/2007 18:21

Hard to imagine when the weather has been so gorgeous

ediemay · 15/03/2007 18:39

"ne'er cast a clout til May be out"!
and don't plant seeds in the ground before mid April!!!!!

Marina · 15/03/2007 18:40

Button to chin, til June come in
