Stories like this always get a rise out of me. But, I suppose I should be thankful for the rights we have here in the West.

I think Iran is a country full of contradictions in that it is a place where women have the right to an education, but then are so restricted in what they are allowed to do. I travelled through Iran about 10 years, and then, as a woman, provided you wore the cover up gear, there was absolutely no problem, although I had the distinct impression that the average person on the street was a lot more liberal than the politicians. I get the impression that life has become a lot harder for women there in the last 10 years.

I work with an Iranian woman who has nothing nice to say about the current government. She wants America to go in and overthrow them.

very worrying.

I'm not sure America would improve things tho. women's rights in Iraq and Afghanistan haven't really improved have they?

Eleusis · 08/03/2007 18:10

I don't think America is going to go in and overthrow the government. It would be a bad PR move.

Unfortunately, I think America is waiting for Israel to do it for them, or at least to give them an excuse.

The US would need a very good reason to go in. I know there is a lot of talk at the moment about them invading Iran but lets face it, the election has begun and I just don't see it happening. Iran would have to attack Israel or get really bold with their nuclear weapons program. Although to be honest I wouldn't put either past Mahmud Ahmadinejad.

Roskvawantingsomesunshine · 08/03/2007 20:51

I read somewhere in the media that Israel has a whole military unit dedicated to plotting an attack on Iran, and that hey had requested US permission to fly through Iraqi airspace.

paulaplumpbottom · 08/03/2007 21:08

I doubt Israel would attack them either. They would need to be assured of the US's backing and I think they would only get it immediatly if Iran attacked them.
