How do you get over something like that? Watching the news and the memorial programmes, My heart it breaking. It must be like a living nightmare. The families never really got justice either, had their relatives stolen by the mining company and their money stolen by the conservatives. Quite possibly one of the saddest tragedies of the last century.

I had never even heard of this before now but it's absolutely tragic and devastating. As a mother I can't even begin to imagine the horror.

I'd heard of it but happened before my time. This year for the first time I looked through this:

And read through what happened, although its the photos that speak to me. The event itself was unbearable but to read that a surviving child didn't describe what he had seen to his parents as he 'didn't want to put them through it'. Or that the stoicism of the day meant that it was never talked about. Or that a bitterness existed between those families who had lost their children & those that hadn't.

My DP & his friend were moaning about elf & safety in their workplace yesterday & I thought thank fuck we have it now, yes people moan about it but it will prevent more disasters & hopefully will mean that another Aberfan will not happen. There were concerns about No7 tip before the slide & a letter was sent to NCB warning of an incident like this & pointing out that the school was in its path.
