Camber sands tragedy

What on earth has happened at Camber Sands? Are there insufficient life guards or something? I am not prone to hysteria but I would not be going to that beach anytime soon. Such a terrible event, somewhat buried by other news yesterday and the string of drownings in the last week.

Awareness it goes in and out is standard I hope . What is not, is how far it may go out at different places in the uk, and how fast it may therefore come back in again.

In the early 80s my school would take us all to Weston super mare, rarely would we actually see any sea as it disappears very fast over the horizon and equally fast comes back (timing is was everything!). I remember classmates getting stuck in the mud. Every year at least one person goes to brean/burnham sands not far away and parks their car (which is allowed but only by the dunes) yet people park too far out and end up losing their car to the tide. There are many ship wrecks in the area never recovered for a reason - it's full of mud/soft sand that's very hard to get out of.

On the other hand in some places the tide doesn't go out so far it cannot be seen, or reappear fast.

I don't know Camber sands, I know other places with similar conditions. What makes a place like this dangerous, is the speed of the incoming tide and the presence of sandbanks. The channels between the sandbanks can mean that you quickly get out of your depth and that the sea can come in to the front and side of you.
