lol Xenia that truly is a classic.

Should be quote of the week.

mozhe · 02/02/2007 18:42

Can anyone on this thread truly put their hand up and say people with children over 11 should be allowed to stay at home, do nothing and get paid for it ? Come on....That is sheer, utter laziness...and I don't want to pay for it.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/02/2007 18:44

It's not recommended that children of 11 should be home alone. If the jobs available to you do not pay enough to cover after school and holiday care then what can you do?

Oh sorry, Xenia answered that one. Get a man to support you.

brandy7 · 02/02/2007 18:49

xenia, how old were your kids when your hubby left you?

EllieKwithabigbump · 02/02/2007 18:51

i totally agree with mozhe and i AM a single parent. it's not easy, but there are loads of jobs term-time only, I did well with qalifications but if i have to become a dinner lady or cleaner just so i can work to support my boys when they're both at school then that's what i'll do.

brandy7 · 02/02/2007 18:53

quoted by xenia

"Most parents who are married with children over 11 have to work. I don't see why parents on benefits should be in some special category that means they are exempt from having to work."

duh, because if youre married there is two people to share childcare . this is all about lone parents is it not?

you havent answered my question yet?

nutcracker · 02/02/2007 18:55

A job as a dinner lady would hardely even make a dent in most peoples rent infact you'd probably still be entitled to most of your benefits so not really much point in that IMO.

I do think that people should try to get a job once their kids are at school yes, but only if they can find affordable childcare that they are happy with. I certainly wouldn't put my kids into sub standard childcare just to satisfy people who thought I should be at work.

Oh God. Have you read the thread?

I don't know any SAHM who stays at home and does nothing. However old her children are. Whether she's single or partnered / married.

brandy7 · 02/02/2007 19:01

Careful nutty you'll be accused of blaming crap childcare as an excuse next

i agree with your point totally, i work part time and still receive IS as i only work a few hours and i dont give a stuff if that makes me underclass

i dont think xenia is a real person anyway, not coming out with all that bollox. has anyone actually met her

EllieKwithabigbump · 02/02/2007 19:08

it's not about not receiving any benefits, it's about making the effort to do something to help support yourself. and no, i wouuld never put my ds's in crap childcare just to work, in fact i left my last job because the nursery was awful and i reported them to ofsted, meaning i had no childcare for ds. but when i found somewhere better i also looked for work again. i only work pt as i would hate my ds being in full-tme childcare, and i don't earn much but i do at least feel i am contributing to my income

mozhe · 02/02/2007 19:12

saggar, not recommended by whom ? An 11 year old can be left at home for a couple of hours, and if not an 11 year old then how about a 12 year old....with a neighbour to go to in an emergency, your phone number, snack, homework, TV...come on..
Ellie, good on you....it works because you really want it to.You are an inspiration to all on this thread.
Xenia is real. lots of people agree with her too...me for one ! And yes I'm real too !
Yes...it does sound like the familiar blaming inadequate childcare argument !

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/02/2007 19:13

But the thread is about not receiving benefits Ellie. The proposal to end single parent benefit when children reach 11.

nutcracker · 02/02/2007 19:15

I do agree with doing it even if you are no better off. I have recently applied for a job where I won't be any better off and I will still have to have my rent paid as the job is so low paid but I have applied because I want a job and the hours will mean I won't need childcare for my 3 kids.

EllieKwithabigbump · 02/02/2007 19:15

i'm well aware of that, and income support is not a single parent benefit, it a low income benefit, so why are people saying it's not worth working when you wouldn't earn enough to get off IS???? there is no reason for single parents of children over 11 not to work.

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 02/02/2007 19:15

The NSPCC recommends that children under 13 are only left for a short period.

nutcracker · 02/02/2007 19:16

An inspiration to those who can't be arsed do you mean mozhe ???

brandy7 · 02/02/2007 19:18

ellie, read the whole thread,a lot of single parents have kids with SEN so therefore cannot work

EllieKwithabigbump · 02/02/2007 19:18

i work because i can, i have narcolepsy so it's not easy and would be far easier to sit on my arse and let other tax payers fund my children, but why shoulud they? and yes, it works because i want it to, i put the effort in to make it work.

mozhe · 02/02/2007 19:18

Bravo Ellie !
It IS a short period !!
I don't know what you mean nutcracker ?

EllieKwithabigbump · 02/02/2007 19:19

that's fine, i wouldn't work if that were my situation, buut again, they are not 'not working' because of being single parents, but because of the SEN.

brandy7 · 02/02/2007 19:20

well i hope you havent got a job that involves driving then ellie

brandy7 · 02/02/2007 19:21

was meant to put a grin after that. my neighbour has narcolepsy and has fallen asleep at the wheel

EllieKwithabigbump · 02/02/2007 19:21

yes actually i have, i drive to get too and from work and undergo yearly dvla assessments that declare me fit for driving, as do many with narcolepsy. but thanks for your concern.

EllieKwithabigbump · 02/02/2007 19:22

i do find it quite a comical condition to suffer from brandy but i am careful, and also very lucky that it is a mild case
