How terrifying that this can happen - not going to start speculating about how/why it's happened, but hope she pulls through.

Jo..
Mia culpa. I am never good with names. and there is no edit function.

Professor, I was watching one of the news interviews (yesterday I think) and there is actually a group purely for that reason.

I can't for the life of me remember what it's called, but it's a properly set up thing which joins up the police & healthcare professionals .
Basically, the MPs and their aides are briefed about security etc & told that any concerns (odd or abusive correspondence, phone calls, interactions etc) should be reported to this group who will do checks & investigate & intervene as necessary.

The man who was interviewed said that sadly a lot of MPs don't report stuff as they think it's like betraying their constituents.

News: "Thomas Mair has given his name as “death to traitors, freedom for Britain” as he appeared in court charged with the murder of Labour MP Jo Cox."

Destinysdaughter · 18/06/2016 11:11

Well that certainly clears up the issue of his motivation then...

Littlemisslovesspiders · 18/06/2016 12:00

Worth remembering this now he has been charged.

An interesting theory? With no evidence but hey, why let that get in the way?

chilledwarmth · 18/06/2016 15:10

Theories don't have evidence, that's why we call them theories. If there was evidence it would be fact. Is the fact that he carried this attack out so close to a major attack in America a coincidence or was Professor right in saying it might have been a "revenge" thing that he justified in his head?

Helmetbymidnight · 18/06/2016 15:17

Ah ok- well it was carried out just before the Wales England football match - perhaps he's a footy fan? Coincidence? I don't think so.
Ooh and one week after the queens birthday- maybe it was a deranged mans 'present?'
100 years since battle of the Somme- maybe it's related to show the terrible nature of war?

UnderTheGreenwoodTree · 18/06/2016 15:33

It's got fuck all to with the Orlando shootings, which targeted the LGBT community Hmm This was a man shouting Britain First, and who introduced himself in court as "Death to traitors, freedom for Britain".

For god's sake.

And no, I don't want British people carrying guns on the street - with any violent incident turning into gunfight at the OK Corral, and our gun death statistics rising to those of America.

hackmum · 18/06/2016 18:26

Which bit of "Contempt laws now apply" don't people understand?

OhYouBadBadKitten · 18/06/2016 19:44

all of it hack. I have no idea what that means.

chilledwarmth · 18/06/2016 22:47

helen that's just silly. Not that I think you really believe any of what you said, I just don't get why you said it.

hackmum what exactly does your "contempt laws" state can and can't be said about someone who is charged, I'm assuming it would be something like you can't say he is guilty or suggest he is guilty, as it could compromise his right to a fair trial?

Helmetbymidnight · 19/06/2016 08:57

They are theories without evidence or critical reasoning.
Same as the one you find so interesting.
This is how stupid spreads.

On Jo Cox's birthday this Wednesday, show the world that we have far #moreincommon with each other than that which divides us.

Across the world, we will gather together to celebrate Jo's life, her warmth, love, energy, passion, flair, Yorkshire heritage, and her belief in the humanity of every person in every place, from Batley and Spen to Aleppo and Darayya.

Jo believed that there is more that unites us than divides us, and she was killed for those beliefs. She believed in a love that is fierce, brave and humble. Her death has devastated a family, and attacked the ideals that we as a nation most cherish.

But we will not be divided. We will rise up together to carry Jo's message forward. We will meet hate with love.

On the day Jo would have been 42, we are asking everyone, everywhere to love like Jo loved.

Jo's legacy is a direct challenge to everyone here, to take part, speak up and be a voice for the voiceless, to treat even those we disagree with with tolerance and genuine respect.

Let's honour Jo on Wednesday by carrying forward the message that she now symbolises around the world - that we have #moreincommon than that which divides us.

These events are being organised by a global network of Jo's friends and colleagues, in close collaboration with her family.

If you are unable to join one of these events, please consider celebrating Jo by donating to her fund at gofund.me/jocox
