The front cover story of the indie today talks about the alarming numbers of children dying in Iraq because of lack of infrastructure and basic things like child-sized needles and oxygen masks....

news.independent.co.uk/world/middle_east/article2165470.ece

my question is... if normal people, could buy some supplies of this stuff, would we ever be able to get it to Iraq?

i don't always believe in just throwing money at people because you never know what its going to be used for...

do you think there is a way for people to get that stuff over there???

sorry, random i know, but i get so upset and angry about things like this.

There must be, it can't be that hard, loads of people are working over there and visiting family etc. I have an Iraqi friend. He lives in NI but has family over there. I think he was over visiting last year. He mightn't know where to send help to though but I'll ask him.

it is just beyond belief what families must be going through over there. Just nightmarish. I would be interested to know if there was anything we could do.

hmmm, well, maybe we could look into doing a mumsnet charity run?

what do you all think??

raising money is one [important] thing - getting the equipment they need and getting it out there is another. Is the red crescent organisation doing anything out there? Or medecin san frontieres? Anyone know?

Ladymuck · 19/01/2007 16:52

I know that UNICEF were doing some stuff out there. I had been reading about pg mothers during the latest war who couldn't get to a hospital to give birth.

Okay I haven't anything more helpfull to add having spoken to my Iraqi friend. He and his wife suggest contacting an islamic charity and have been thinking of doing the same thing.
